Who is in South-East Michigan (or thereabouts)?
« on: 14 Jul 2007, 03:15 pm »

In the past week or so I've seen a bunch of posts from various people who seem to live in the south-east Michigan area:  Big Red Machine, NicksGems, Rockadanny.  I'm sure there are others out there.  Personally, I'm in Ann Arbor, but that's not so far from Detroit.

Anyway...how shall I put this?  I want to hear your systems!  Why haven't I heard your systems?  I'll bring beer.

Seriously, do people around here ever get together to listen?

Even more seriously, I will bring beer.

Chad

Hey Chad,

I'm in the A2 area as well, and I like beer  :icon_lol:

I am nearing the final stages of waiting for some new equipment.  I'll have a pair of Salk HT3's, and Klaus from Odyssey is building a pair of Mono Extreme SE's as well as a Candela pre amp for me.  A few NOS tubes have already been ordered  aa

I should have everything around the end of the month.  I would like to let things "settle down" with the new equipment for about a month, but will pm you when I'm golden on my end.

Unfortunately, I have yet to (but will) delve into the vinyl world, but do have a Slimdevices Transporter for two channel listening.

Mark,

That sounds awesome.  The plan, that is.  The system, I imagine, will sound wonderful too.  I heard the HT3s with Van Alstine amplification at the Audio Karma festival earlier this year, and really liked them a lot.

My system is a little different, with single driver speakers from Omega, 40 w chip amplification from Channel Islands and a little 6sn7-based pre-amp from Space Tech Labs.  It probably comes as no surprise that I like beer in my own home just as much as in somebody else's.  So I'd be happy to have you around for a listen and some beer sometime too.

Alas, School Kids Records closed between 8 and 10 years ago.  That was while I was still doing my graduate degree at the U of M, and I recall that the closure was accompanied by much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the town's long term inhabitants.  SKR remained partially operational for a while, selling records out of the basement of some State Street clothing store.  But I think that enterprise has come to an end too.

Fortunately for vinyl lovers there remain quite a few second-hand record stores in the area.   Each time I pass one I start to calculate the likelihood of divorce ensuing if I were to invest in a record collection, turntable, cartridge, phono stage, cabling, isolation, record cleaning equipment....

I am definitely going to have an audio-based get together late summeror September-ish.  And I always have a HEMI HT meet in January.  Last year we had 52 people.

So yeah, it seem crazy that we have so many folks here and not enough sharing.

Once upon a time, there was a record store in a basement room in the Mich. Union building. Can you imagine anything like that these days?

I'd love to have ya over, but I've since moved to Atlanta, GA, eight years ago to escape the ccccccold weather. Otherwise I would. And those Salk speakers are awesome. I visited Jim last year(?) or so - fabulous guy - fabulous speakers - on one of my trips up there. And I still speak of my experiences from time to time, so that's why it seems like I may still be up there. Sounds like fun!

I'm about an hour from A2 (after US 23 work is finished north of town) and 1.5 hours from Detroit.

Flintstone lives not too far from me in Flint (duh).

And an college buddy of mine lives in A2 with Hedlund Horns, 300B monoblocks, etc. (but he married a couple of years ago and may have had to put the toys away).

Hawthorne Audio (Daryl and Diane) live about an hour west of A2.  And Hurdy Gurdy Dave (who builds their crossovers) lives about an hour past me from A2.

There was a group from the Detroit area that were meeting about 8 times a year, but the guy who did most of the organizing lost his job and may have moved away as I haven't heard from them in years.

Chad,

I would definately like to hear your system, and appreciate the invite as well.  And yes, I will bring beer  :icon_lol:
If you get a chance, you MUST check out Pete's systems.  His dedicated rooms are spectacular.  And...he built them himself..talk about a diehard audiophile!

Mark, I have some tubes for you to try.

Pete,

Thanks!  I look forward to it.  :thumb:  When we get together, I hope to have a pair or two for you to check out as well.

Chad,

We were following each other around AK fest this year.  I ended up buying a pair of Salk HT3 speakers not too long after that show.  I was sold.
I sold a bunch of gear to finance the purchase and am thrilled I made that decision.

I am in Troy.

I would like to hang out sometime but my schedule is pretty brutal at this point and I am going to be without my amp for about 4-5 weeks.  I am listening to some Grado cans right now to help get me by.  I hate being without my main rig but as long as their are some tunes playing it is cool.
I am working full time and going to school at night and have plenty of yardwork to do.  I also just decided on a whim last week to take down a bunch of kitchen cabinets and remodel my kitchen.  My wife was not too thrilled :x

I have made several buddies through AC and Audiogon the last couple years.

I just recently sold my Sig 70s to a fellow AC member in A2 but he already moved out of state.

I just had the pleasure of meeting Pete since he was so nice to volunteer his help on my solder repair.  I won't be able to test it out until I get my amp back but I am thrilled he was willing to help and he didn't even know me.   :thumb:

I am always jealous of the NY Raves I read about and see these guys listening to a bunch of amazing gear and cool music.  It would be awesome to start something like that in our neck of the woods.

I am currently not in a position that I could do that with my schedule and my wife is even busier than I am with school and full time work.  I will keep my eyes and ears open for opportunities to get together.

Hope everyone is having a great summer.

Great thread!

Nick

Would luv to participate as I get up to SE MI quite often. Sounds like fun.
I'm down in Central OH and not much seems to be happening around here

Pete, let me know when your next event is as we could connect at Audiofest. Like to hear that Moscode :D

Seems like there are a few of us with HT3's. 8)

Hey,

I'm also in A2. I'd love to get a chance drink & listen with you folk. My home is also open for anyone who'd like to listen to my gear. I run a peculiar little system featuring a much upgraded Scout and a pair of Manley 300B monoblocks.

I have little time to listen these days because I've just started a new business, but I'm available Sunday nights...

Cheers,

Ivan

Hey Ivan,

It sounds like I share another interest of yours as well.  Before I moved to A2 I was in North Carolina, and was running a 75g FOWLR tank.  Well, until I had a little plumbing problem, and pumped about 20 gallons all over the parquet floors.  We moved to a much smaller place in Ann Arbor, and my wife felt justified in outlawing aquariums.

If you've got a lionfish, I'm definitely jealous.

I've got to say, I'm really grateful to everyone who has responded in this thread.  Everyone's generosity and enthusiasm is overwhelming.  I'll have to buy a lot of beer if I'm to hear everyone's systems.  It seems like it will be money well spent.

I'm going to discuss the issue with my wife and see if I can arrange something at my place sometime soon.  The issue with my place is that it's...well...dimensionally challenged.  In fact, my place is so small I'm not sure I even have room for a "sweet spot."  Regardless, it would be nice to meet some people, and hear some different systems.  I've cobbled my system together on recommendations and reviews from people on AC.  And the reality is that I've never spent much time listening to other systems that have any pretensions to audiophile quality.

I have a dedicated listening room, but it's not big, and I'm not very conveniently located.  But the rest of the place is nice enough.  We could set up a 2nd room upstairs (if we pick the weekends that the kids are gone).

Where on the west side Max?

St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area.

And the weird thing is is that I was at AudioKarma Fest and didn't get to meet anyone except a banned member
