I haven't heard many great singers.  Mostly opera greats come to mind.  As for whom I've seen live, I greatly enjoyed this one:

Grad from USC a couple years ago, studied jazz voice with Tierney Sutton.  Her sidemen are excellent live performers, as well.

She's some 22-23 years old now, and I think she's not as good as she used to be, sings a different way and stuff like that. But I heard her sing when she was 12 years old,, and It's just one of those times you know...
that what you hear is rare indeed! A voice so utterly pure and a pitch and singing musicality...
When this woman was 12 years old, she could sing like no one I have ever heard before or since!
And I've attended an enormous amount of concerts and small happenings with a LOT of superb singers!!!
But that time, is still the best I've ever heard!

She's Kine Therese Ludvigsen... from Norway of course...  :thumb: and on this picture I believe she's 17 or thereabout.

If you right click and save this file, you hear her sing when she is ca 8-9 years old.

at 12 she peaked as a singer IMHO. It was just an angels voice!

Opera-trained blues singer from Chicago...I saw her perform at Kingston Mines in 1987 and was blown away.  Unfortunately, she died at the young age of 33

The best singer, most moving singer I have ever heard and will probably ever hear by far was Jerry Garcia. A voice that contained eons of wisdom, and incredible love.

I second Sarah Brightman. Her performance at LiveEarth was amazing.

Lara Fabian is my other pick.

Cheers

sang at a Catholic Church 3 Christmas's ago....she just blew everyone away.

Turns out she was in college as a music major with her voice being her instrument.

Who is the best singer you ever heard?

What genre are we discussing?  Pop?  Opera?  Classical?  Country?  Too broad, so we should have many entries, contending his/her favorite's the best.  Apples and oranges situation.

A great voice - popular female vocal, that is.  How about Georgia Gibbs?  Anyone ever heard of her?

Hmmm,

For Blues/Jazz/R&B, I like Peggy Lee; Anita O'Day; Lydia Pense; Tracy Nelson; Nick Gravenites; Roger Troy; Ray Kennedy; Lalah Hathaway; Janet Planet; and probably a zillion others I can't think of off the top of my bald head :|

For Traditional/Classical, I like Andrea Bocelli; Sarah Brightman; Celine Dion; Bernadette Peters; and a lady I used to work with (who's name escapes me) that had the sweetest voice I ever heard. She used to sing at various civic and Christmas functions locally. She should have turned pro.

oh yeah, and not to forget Sinatra...

Talk about opera singers my favorite is Katia Ricciarelli for Italian operas.  But.... hers was a shortlived careeer I think.  Disappeared after several years in the spotlight.  Burnt out.  Her debut recording, Verdi arias, will disarm you.  It  should still available, mixed with a couple of duets with Domingo, etc.  Also, Erika Koth came to mind.  German technique, the voice just "floats" (hear her L'amero saro costante and you'll agree), singing techniques totally different from the verismo Italian style.

Louis Armstrong, in my opinion the greatest musician of the twentieth century.  All modern popular singers, whether they know it or not sing in a style developed by Louis.  YMMV
