resistor color codes
« on: 24 Jun 2007, 01:56 am »
Hi All,

I'm building/stuffing a kit tube rectified power supply and have no experience with reading the color codes on resistors.  With what I have vs. what I need, I've come up with the following and would really appreciate it if somebody could confirm and/or correct my assigning of values for the following:

red - purple - orange = 27k
red - black - yellow - gold = 200k 5%
yellow - purple - orange - gold = 47k 5%
brown - yellow - black - orange - brown = 140k
brown? - black - white - gold?  = 100k, this one has a rust colored body and is hard to 'read' but, process of elimination makes it a 100k, I hope!

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thank you Lee!  I did use a similar chart but, being a newby and a nit, I wanted to run it passed those who know for a nod before soldering them in  :thumb:

This is another one or you can calculate your resistors by using this below

Or you could use something like

Bad boys rape our young girls buy violet gives willingly

There are other versions, but this is the one that I have used lately.

edit
Oh, I just checked the link, and saw that they have a version that is close to mine, but I guess ravish is more PC than rape.

Thank you Tan, the calculator is sweet!  The first three check out, I need to look at the bands of the last two again

For a serious suggestion, get a DVM.  You should have one, to make sure the power supply is working right, and it is easier to use a meter to figure out a resistor value than by reading the color codes.  Even if I figure it out by color codes, I always feel better when the meter verifies it.

Randy, you're back!  :thumb:  I've an antique Simpson VOM, it'll only give me ohm readings up to the 100x band, the 10k band is shot.  Guess I do need to spend some money on a digital...

Hi Gordy
Back, but just for a bit.  I am actually leaving for a pretty long vacation on Tuesday, which will be followed by a business trip, so I will be gone for almost a month.  Am taking the family to Korea and Japan  :thumb:.

Doh! Forget it! My mistake.

But, do measure before soldering :thumb:
