boead,
I have to agree with you. The new iPhone doesn't hold any new anythings other than maybe the interface. I've had cell phones since the days back in the mid-80's. In one sense they are a Godsend on the other hand I curse their existence as they can be so entirely disruptive. Immediate availability
all the time (unless you turn the damned thing off).
I currently use the PPC-6700 through Sprint. Yes I have complete connectivity a la the EVO network (quite fast I might mention). And yes I can do the YouTube thing, email via Outlook (though I have mine turned off because its farging disruptive), Word, Excel, MS Access, Power Point plus a half dozen other MS Mobile programs. I can do the GPS thing too along with taking pictures.

I do find myself using the web a fair amount. I use it to do some quick reference searches, minor surfing when I have some down time and no computer, checking email (web based) and so on. The price of the memory upgrades on the iPhone is simply silly. My 6700 uses the mini-SD card that can be had for under $50 for a 4gig card. Though the 6700 has Windows Media Player and a headphone jack, I don't use it for music but some do.
I do use my camera a lot more than you might expect. It really comes in handy when I don't feel like dragging along a real camera. The phone catches the essence of what I want to capture. Most of my pictures are used for work (construction documentation) but I have used it at several of the GAS gatherings when I forgot to bring my regular camera. The pic's usually aren't horrible, here's an example or two.....

I'm not sure I could do without my 6700 after having one for several years now. The slide up screen revealing the keyboard is greatly superior to the Blackberry IMO. Speaking of Crackberry's, one of the guys I work with is completely addicted to his. Emails are one thing but when you spend the entire day on the damned thing typing email responses rather than picking up the phone and having a three minute conversation, I personally think you've lost all perspective. That's precisely why I've turned off my email. If something is an emergency or you need to discuss something, call me, if it's just a reminder or of low importance, email me and I'll see it in an hour or two when I log on.
This message is a perfect example. I just spent the best part of twenty or so minutes typing (and correcting for my fat fingers) what I could have audibly said in about three minutes. Sometimes technology isn't worth the effort IMO.
....oh, and you are completely correct, video's on a 3" screen.......thanks, no. It's all just gimmickry to sell us more crap that we really don't need.
Sincerely,
Crusty the Curmudgeon
