HELP: SP2 upgrade gets OVERHEATED
« on: 12 Jun 2007, 08:40 am »
Hi,
Since I've upgraded the SP1.7 to the SP2, it runs super hot.
Over 50 degrees Celsius / 122 F, without even playing, just powered up...
At the point that it reaches a temperature above 45-50 degrees Celsius, the pre-amp starts to do very funny things.
Like resetting when switched to 5.1 bypass, or increasing volume to 100%, or the opposite 0%, (the volume motor is running until the reset is finished).
I can tell you that maximum volume is really scary... almost exploding loudspeakers

The pre-amp went a few times back to Canada, but they were unable to fix the problem, new board and software, etc. was done, but the problem remains...

At this moment I'm almost embarrassed to send it in again, Last year it spend more then 3 months in the repair dept.

But, now with the new summer, the problem appears more frequent. I found that the pre-amp is about 20-25 C (or 45 F) higher then room temperature. The SP2 is standing on a shelf with enough space around it to let it cool, according to the manual (10 cm above no side panels).

I hope someone can help me with this problem.

To whom it may concern,

I would contact Bryston directly and explain the numerous issues that you have.  The fact that it has been repaired multiple times in the past leads me to believe that you might have a major problem which is not readily repaired.  IMO they should exchange your unit for a new one.

Best of luck,

John

Hi sniels,

Hi sniels,

I checked with service here at Bryston and here is the history:

June 2006  replace power supply switches DVD input doesn't work upgrade to SP2
Aug. 2006 P601T and uP board, didn't actually find anything wrong
Jan 2007 Mafico check it out and no issuse was reported.

So is there a chance you could have a friend try it in another location to confirm the same issues?

Hi James
I live in Holland, and actually asked for a replacement during repair, not only for my comfort but also to check if the problem could be generated in my surroundings.
Unfortunately there are no "spare" sp2...
I don't know what to do, can send it in again and hope the problem becomes visual.
The thing is that the bryston repair is probably airconditioned, my house isn't, temperature rises up to 32 C in summer, now it's around 26 C and it's already too much for the pre-amp... I would say 25 C is about maximum working temp.
I monitor the temperature for the past year and found out that the sp2 becomes around 20-25 C higher then the surrounding, even when there is no music. It actually doesn't make a big difference if something is running.
let me know, what I could do?
best
Niels

SNIELS, I also life in Holland and I ordered an SP2, (James is it already send to Holland? ;-) ) and the shop I bought it from gave me an SP1.7 as an loaner.
I burn my hand when I touch this one. But no software things are going wrong because of the heating.
I hope my new SP2 will not be hotter because then I'm afraid that is going to burn.

Mafico doesn't have any SP2 in stock. When I called Mafico 4 weeks ago I was the only one in Holland who ordered an SP2.

Hi Neils,

We can test units at Bryston at 230 volts and higher summer temperatures. I will ask engineering what temperature they feel should be the maximum before performance issues arise. It just seems odd because we have SP2's all over the world and I am sure in some countries the home temperatures would get very hot as well.

I will get back to you.

Hi James,
that's what I would think, I won't be the only one at 230V,
anyway, before the upgrade the 1.7 was quite hot as well but no problems...
with the upgrade due to a new and more energy consuming DSP the sp2 got really hot.
If you put your hand on top it feels super hot, almost burning.
now it's 50 C, room temp 25C, and on 5.1 bypass it will be worse.

It's really a pity for I love the sound of the sp2!!!

sniels,
Have you actually measured your power line voltage?

Not that I think it will resolve the problem but when my friend worked at a high end shop, I help deliver and set-up lots of stuff incl. several SP 1.7s.  A person I became friendly with near to where I live noted his ran really hot.  I have little ball bearing isolators under it that raises the bottom to about 1.25 inches above the shelf and have about 1.75 inches of room on top and have never had a problem.  He raised his up with little isolation things under the feet and that relieved the issue in his set-up.  Sounds like yours is much worse though.

Hi Phil
thanks, actually that has crossed my mind too.
I've tried it before. it heats up a bit less but still so much that it's acting up...
