GASsed Up HeadFi Meet - NOW WITH PICS!
« on: 11 Jun 2007, 11:58 am »
Hiya Guys,

Just wanted to drop everybody a note to let them know I'll be hosting the first St Louis HeadFi meet on June 23rd. It looks as if there will be about 6 or so HeadFi guys coming out at about 1pm or so. Alex mentioned he was going to come out and bring his cans along with a tubed headphone amp (Little Dot).

I wanted to extend the invitation to everybody in GAS also. As far as gear goes, it is pretty much status quo with the exception that I've got the Nomad Audio Sentinel's set up in the Redrum. Oh, I've also go the Music Maker cartridge that I'll be mounting on the Audio Note TT-1 (right now ts on the LP5). The phono stage in the Redrum will be the Era Gold X Reflex.

So if you can make it, bring your cans and if not, come out and give some cools cans and amps a listen.  :green:

Just a quick bump in case any of you guys find yourself with some free time this Saturday. Looks like (besides the HeadFi guys) Mark (blackmore) and Alex should be coming out.

Should be fun as I'll have several listening stations set up with dedicated sources and headphone amps. I'll probably keep the Blue Room running so the guys can take in a High Efficiency rig. As things slow down, depending on how many people are left  I'll likely turn the Redrum back on so people can listen to the Nomad Audio Sentinel's (they sound quite nice in this room).

If you are free Saturday, buzz on by  :thumb:

I won't be able to make it, Scott. We have the Crestwood 60th Anniversary Festival and Parade that day.

Well guys, the HeadFi meet was a great success.

Mark and Alex from the GAS group came out to partake in the festivities. We ended up with four of the HeadFi guys dropping by, Kevin, Aaron and his friend and Ichinici.

Despite having plumbing problems (the tailpiece from my kitchen sink decided to rot out a day or two ago and emptied two days worth of drainage all over my Radii's), we were able to get the Redrum back in shape, the plumbing fixed and set up several listening stations setup for all the cans we had in house.

I set up the AH! with the Slee Solo MkIII, the Sony SACD with the Little Dot tube amp (great pairing BTW) and the Arcam with my DIY Altoids amp. Each of the guys brought two or three pairs of cans plus a amp or two. For the life of me, I can't remember what all was here but there was definitely some great sounding cans and amps. Maybe Kevin can chime in and help out with some of the guest gear.

So here's a couple of pics. Sorry about the quality, I'm still getting used to the new camera.

This one is of the Sony SACD and the Little Dot. Also, that is the iModded iPod that Vinnie does sitting next to the amp.

This one is of Kevin in the foreground, Alex and Mark sitting at a couple of the listening stations (I set up one source facing one direction and the other source facing another).

This one is of the HeadFi guys. Thats Aaron on his Mac, Ichinichi, Aaron's friend, and Kevin.

and finally the last listening station with the AH! paired to the Little Dot.

I've got to say it was completely refreshing having the HeadFi guys digging through and playing my Classical collection rather than looking for modern rock and alternative, not to mention Kevin going for some great old Zepplin and Pink Floyd.

I think we may have converted Ichinichi into a tube guy. He gave a listen to the Grape Room and then auditioned the same piece on the Fleapowered system in the Blue room. Needless to say, he's ruined for life. On the way out the door he was talking about bringing his girlfriend back so she could hear the difference.

It was a great time  :thumb:

It was fun and there is definitely a parallel universe in headphones.  M-Audio Transit, iBasso, Wu 6, etc.  It was great to hear all those different cans. Two versions of the Beyer DT880s (2003, 2006 and sounded quite different) Sennheiser 580 with a re-wire, Senn 555, Grado 60s and 80 and the Allesandro which uses a Grado as a starting point.  My favorites were the Little Dot driving my Sony MDR-F1 because they are such pigs to drive and anything plugged into Aaron's iBasso portable amp.  That is a cool amp and pretty cheap.  GASSERS take note!  I've got to agree with Scott; it was wonderful to see guys pouring over his collection to hear Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto, Beethoven 9. My favorite moment was when Ambrose or Aaron asked if the turntable could skip tracks to hear a different cut.  Wonderful!!!!  Thanks to Scott for hosting and to Kevin for setting it up.  It was a pleasure to meet all of you and I hope we can all get together again for some more listening.

Been so absorded in speakers lately, I need to get more "Phones" savy! The Sony MDR-V600's I have now sound good to me and the 6SN7 WOT preamp I use for an amp works OK.

I missed an opportunity..... next time fellas!

     Have fun!

Looks like a great meet, but we need more PIC's  :icon_twisted:

Headphones really are a fantastic way to get the high-fidelity sound at way cheaper pricetag compared to speakers.  For those who care, if you see an AKG K240 Sextett (not K240S or K240DF, etc) on Ebay or something, Grab it and ask questions later.  Fantastic 25-year-old headphones that will blow your mind under $100 used.  For reference, it's the one on the left  aa
