Nathan:
As a member of the audio journalist crew, I agree with you on many levels and am often very
dismayed by some of the stuff I see. I tried one of those CD demagnetizers and did not have
any luck with it at all. I tried to be as scientific as I could: I used about ten different combinations
of CD, DVD-a, SACD, CD-R, DVD-R, ones with no writing, some writing, a lot of writing, etc
and no one could hear the difference between the "demagnetized" CD. I also used a Meridian 808
and a Wadia 581, so I don't think it was because either of my digital players didn't have enough
resolution!!
Our classical editor has a masters in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Physics, so he's usually
my go to guy whenever I'm not sure about what I'm talking about and he just shakes his head
over most of this stuff as well.
I've also tried those big things that look like coat hangers too! No luck there either.
I like to try and keep an open mind, but I haven't seen any of these snake oil things that work.
Even when it comes to expensive interconnects and power cords. I have heard some definite improvements
in transparency, freedom from grain, but honestly it's a few percent here a few percent there.
I have a fairly good reference system and one day just for laughs, I took both of my Running Springs power
conditioners out of the line, went back to all the stock power cords and 50 dollar interconnects and it was
a pretty dramatic difference, so cumulatively those little bits of resolution really do add up.
But I haven't had any of the questionable things work for me yet!!!
All it does is turn people against the industry and that's bad for all of us.
