Finally finished my Squeezebox PSU

Well, I don't know how many months I have had this PSU sitting on my bench 80% finished.   I finally got the case all built (experimented by using MDF and hammerall textured paint) and put everything together.  I built a little Felix right into the PSU, 'cept the Felix CMC makes a faint buzzing sound, but nothing you can hear from a few feet away.

Anyway, its too early to tell, there are the classic signs of needing breakin like exploding bass and closed in highs, but I don't think I've ever heard my speakers dissapear quite like this before.

I do, but I didn't have a chance last night to up any.   I will shortly.

P.S.  Basically I followed the design that is in a few other threads on this forum... bridge > cap > reg > cap, with things like 47,000uf Jensen 4poles, IXYS bridge and a LT1085 (also have app note for setting voltage).

Either my DMM is slightly off or I didn't set the Reg spot on because I measured 4.77V output.  Close enough to work, but still irks me a bit.

When I built mine, I started with cheap parts and moved up the chain once I figured out what I was doing.  My first go around I used a regulator from the shack which was putting out 4.98V and it wouldn't power the SB3 at all.  Switched that out for an lt1086-5 (the fixed voltage one), and it puts out a solid 5.0 and worked like a charm.  The point of this is...your VT might not be working.

My guess is that my resistors aren't so precision and need some trimming.  I plan to play with it some more, as I haven't even put the top back on.  I was just happy to get it to work after months and months of sitting there waiting to be finished.

The reg chip I mounted with a 3 pin pheonix style connector, so it can easily be swapped out for another chip or I can change reg circuit entirely.

Love to see the pics!

I've just finished upgrading mine with IXYS FREDs and a Auricap film bypass of the filter caps. I also added Stillpoints ERS cloth to the cabinet sides and bottom, plus plenty of ferrite snap-in cores.

Josh,

There is a plenty of reservoir cap (47,000uF) but how do you connect with 4 poles? I got a Jensen 15,000uF/500V with 4 poles but I got stuck that how would I connect the poles to use with 15,000uF? Thanks in advance.

think of it like 2 +,s and 2 -,s in parrallel.  almost like two caps in parrallel.  There is an input +, an input -, an output + and an output -.  Input is cap 1, output is cap 2.  Just dont' put a wire between the inputs and output and it is like two caps in parrallel.
