Has anybody picked up the new Bad Plus release?
« on: 12 May 2007, 04:20 am »

I just discovered that "Prog", by The Bad Plus came out about a week ago.  Has anybody heard it?

If you're interested in picking it up, the band made a coupon available online that will let you get it for $13 (rather than $19) at Borders: http://www.bordersmedia.com/coup/badplus.htm  The coupon's good until May 22.

Yup!  Prog is a totally fun & engaging recording.   Lotsa catchy melodies, lotsa rhythms & drumming , lotsa dynamics.  Highly recommended.

If ya wanna read a formal review, here's one at AllAboutJazz.com:

Yes....it just came out. So I imagine some are selling the promo copies....the one's with the hole punched through the bar code.....but otherwise in fine condition....and maybe others that copy to hard drive, then sell it off. :thumb:

Is "prog" similar to the "These are the Vista's" disc (at least I think that's the name of the album)
I've heard the "Vista's" disc, and think it's pretty cool. Is 'Prog' along the same lines?

Yes it is.  I'd say it's more rock/rhythmical as well as jazzy.  It sounds like they had a fun time playing together.   I recommend it highly.

Still the same three guys I assume?
I liked "Vista's", allthough the guys got carried away on some of the tracks. Occasionally, it seemed, they'd all be jammin' to different songs and got a little outta hand, you know. Is 'prog' the same?

Thanks, alwayslearning

I ordered a copy.  They're a band that I really want to like, but it's a really challenge because of all the chaos and noodling.  (referring to "Give" and "These Are The Vistas", I dunno about the others)  But they pull you in with the Hi-Fi sonics. :duh:

Ahh good!  Glad I'm not the only one, I had just written the same idea but didn't include it.  Yes, sometimes it's like "Are these guys even in the same time zone?  Are they not hearing each other in the headphones or something?"  But I know that's just my Jazz Envy talking. If you don't like it, it must be good.

No, if anything this is more contained. & less jammy to me  There's some long drum solos, but they keep my interest.

There is a longer review here you may find helpful

BTW, if you enjoy Bad Plus, be sure to check out Esbjörn Svensson Trio (they go by E.S.T.)  They're  similar yet more incredible.  E.S.T ranks as one of my favorites!

Nathan - No...You're not the only one. Sometimes I have to turn the volume down, or fast forward to the less chaotic parts.

alwayslearning - I love the drum solo's. in fact, I'm currently researching a "new musical horizon", and that's "Taiko drums", HOLY COW!!! Talk about some drum solos!  :o It'll destroy lesser drivers. :icon_twisted: A few minutes ago, I found a site where I can demo some Taiko drums tracks before I buy the disc. Very cool!
I'll also check out E.S.T., and thanks for that too.

Hey WEEZ,

I don't want to jump the thread or answer for alwayslearning, but I agree with the E.S.T. recommendation.  I have "Viaticum", "Seven Days of Falling" and "Strange Place for Snow" and like them all.  I wouldn't compare them that closely to The Bad Plus, but there are similarities in the noodling quality to the music.  I believe AC member Scott Faller is a big e.s.t. fan, as I recall reading some posts about them by him, I think.

I think that's why they refer to it as playing "out"...as in "out of time", "out of key", "out of tune", "out of their minds"...
Personally, I like it!

It's good in small doses.  Maybe those sections are helpful to make the non-musicially inclined listener feel like, "Hey, I bet I could play this music!"  If I remember correctly that one cheesy Big Band guy had this same theory...dammit what's his name? Real elevator music kinda stuff that your grandma watched on TV...can't remember it.  Anyway like that, but reversed.
