Rob,

to the vendors here I'd love some very specific recommendations.  Don't worry about sounding like a shill, I want you to shill! :)

You want, shill, I'll give you shill!

For a room like that our Standard Surround Room Kit will do a stellar job. The lower "3D" drawing on the left side of this page shows where to place the various pieces:

http://www.realtraps.com/placing_mt.htm

With that ceiling, and no chance to get above it, you'll hang four MiniTraps from the grid using the free clips we have available for that.

The next step up is to add a row of diffusors along the back wall. But good diffusors cost more than good absorbers, so diffusion back there is more an option than a necessity.

Was that enough shilling for your tastes? 8)

--Ethan

Thanks, Ethan!  I did indeed ask for shill. 8)  I've been meaning to try out some of your RealTraps for awhile.  I think it's gonna have to wait until I buy a new PJ, though.  But I'm glad to see you don't think the room is "hopeless." :)

Weird- I thought I posted 3 pictures?  Anyhoo, I got the PJ bought (should ship tomorrow), so one peice of the puzzle is solved.  I got some fabric swatches on the way for curtains to mask the front & side walls as well as the ceiling.  Been talking to Ethan about some traps (thanks, Ethan! :) Btw, remind me to ask about the clips that hold Traps to a suspended ceiling...).  I will use my old Monitor Audio Bronze 3's and Bronze Center with my old MA Silver FX/i surrounds for a little while to avoid buying more speakers (sold my MA 8i & 12i Center- :duh:!  Didn't think I'd need 'em, now wish I had them back...).  Just need a sub and some furniture. :)

The building will probably start in a week or 10 days.

Rob,

We provide those for free, but please remind me because they're not included automatically unless someone asks.

Rob,

I would line those ceiling corners with Seams from the new Response PRO line.  They aren't as pretty as the Adapts, but they are cheaper and now almost the same size as the Rectangles.  Put four in the vertical corners as well, with the obligatory 4 Corners.  Then notch out the bass nodes with your EQ.  You'll get great, convincing sound if you can tame those few nodes, and clean up the echo with the Response PROs.

Best,

Thanks, Nathan.  I've really enjoyed the Adapt Corners and Response Seams, but I've never heard of the Response PRO line.  If it's on your web site I'm not seeing it anywhere?

It's soon to be released...  Less than 2 months for the first batch.  I guess I'm getting ahead of myself.  :-)

That was a real bitch of a room!
7 feet high, a little over 10 feet wide and 24 feet deep...

...

Try this Rob! Move the speakers 5,6 feet into the room (measured from their fronts)
Park you butt 11,2 feet in front of them! 11,2 feet in front of the speaker plane...
What do you hear?

I think the acoustic sweet spot is sitting 37% into the room from the front or rear wall (or was that 38%???). Ask Ethan for the exact amount. Speaker placement should then be set to optimize that location. I would simulate ideal speaker placement based on room dimensions and fine tune to taste.

As for the rest, I would put hi-density traps (4" thick) in the corners and low density traps (2" thick) at first reflection points. I would strongly consider diffusion in the rear since you'll potentially be 9 or so feet into the room.

What projector did you end up getting? How's the project coming along? If you haven't purchased your screen, I would strongly consider a DIY acoustically transparent screen with SmX cloth (~1.1 gain) and have it the width of the room. Even with a screen that big, your seating distance will be about 1.5 x the screen width, and with 1.1 gain, brightness shouldn't be a problem. A seating position to SW ratio of 1.5:1 is great for 720p and and anything larger would be a crime with 1080p! If you did use the SmX cloth, you could then pack whatever acoustic treament you want behind the screen and it'll look still look beautiful!!! You could put the screen about a foot or so in from the wall with the acoustic treatments behind it. You could then put your gear below it and make that look all fancy. Then you could put your speakers 5 or 6 feet in from the wall. It would look great!!!

Keep us posted :D.

Just a thought... you may consider AV123's soon to be released open baffle center for LCR duty. Three of them won't be expensive and the open baffle part would go over well with your room acoustics and prospective speaker placement. LCR's would be nice as they won't block the screen when placed below it, but would still benefit greatly from being placed out into the room. Kind of the best of both worlds and you'd have a nice airy sound in the theater. The speaker should be plenty good as this system won't be used as your primary 2 channel room.

klh is pretty close.  38% to start and then tweak from there.  Not all issues are corner related though those are the best bang for the buck if you do it to a point that will reach deep enough.

Since PLMONROE started with the puns, I'll simply add that Chairologests usually have stools up their but.  Sorry but I just couldn't resist.

Well, the SMX material is a very good option down the road, but my journey has ended before it's begun- looks like I'll be moving in a couple months!  It sucks in a way (since I overall really like the house) but I'll be very happy to get back home again (aka Sioux Falls).  Looks like I'll be doing this all over again before long!

BTW, I bought a Barco 701.  No point in hanging it for 1 month.  I'll probably just store it for a couple months til I get settled into my new place.

Well, I guess you're gonna be leaving the chair right where you found it? Waiting for the next person's adventure in the 70's basement. I think there is a Stephen King novel hidden in there somewhere.

Good luck at the new job and new digs!
