I like these threads. They've been the source of many new music finds for me.

Its why we do 'em.  Sharing is as much fun as learning.

P.S. Tool is by far the hardest in that bunch...the rest are a bit more melow, some quasi pop, some Americana style folk.

The Racconteurs-Broken Boy Soldiers
The Decemberists-The Crane Wife
Arctic Monkeys-Whatever People Say I Am,That's What I Am Not
Morrissey-Live At Earls Court

The copyright on the Morrissy CD is 2005, but I bought it last year and he deserves mention whenever possible.  There is a cover of Patti Smith's "Redondo Beach" on this CD that is great.

Some good ones that I didn't list but agree with:
The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers
Built to Spill - You in Reverse
Arctic Monkeys-Whatever People Say I Am,That's What I Am Not (although its good, not my favorite)

Haven't really gotten into "My Morning Jacket - Z" yet...just a little too slow or something.

I didn't like the first Arcade Fire, so I haven't picked up Neon Bible.

I haven't bought "The Shins - Wincing the Night Away" yet, but don't know why since I love their others.

Wincing the Night Away is very good, but not great. It just seems to be missing something that the earlier Shins albums had. I can't place my finger on it. I think it might be too polished.

Z is a slow burner. The first time I listened to it I couldn't make it through the entire album. The second time I made it through a little further, and by the third listen I made it all the way through and really started to dig it. Now I think it's one of my favorite albums of this decade. Just give it some time, it'll grow on you. I find this to be my experience with some of my favorite albums.

"Z" is great!  I saw MMJ a few months back (November) for the 2nd time.  Absolutely GREAT show!!!!

Regarding The Decemberists. . .the music isn't bad. . .but, I can't STAND the way the guy sings.  The way he over enunciates every sillable.  It bugs the crap out of me!!!  If he didn't do that, I might be able to listen more.  His voice, w/o doing that, isn't bad.

That is what I think about Kings of Leon....I dig his playing, but his voice bugs the crap out of me.

Since I started buying music, last year was probably the slowest year for purchases, sadly.  Anyways, my favorite album from last year was David Gilmour, "On an Island."

Luckily, got to see him in concert in Chicago, too.

The Decemberists "The Crane Wife."  To these old foogie ears (having heard Layla one too many times on the radio) this album is an exhilirating breath of fresh air-one of the most exciting albums by a new (to me) artist I've heard in a long time.  The closest I could come to classifying the music would be progressive, akin to Genesis or Yes at their heyday (but very different sounding).

Their picaresque album is much better in my opinion...

My favs:

Broken social scene - selftitled
Asobi Seksu  - citrus
Hot chip - the warning
Menomena - Friend and foe ( or is that this year?)
Tv on the radio- return to cockie mountain
The Islands- selftitled

THe postal service was released in 2003... Checkout   Dntel - Life is full of possibilites if you liked it.

Mine:
Postal Service - Give

I purchased this album this weekend.  I've listened to it twice, and I think it's outstanding.  I also like Ray LaMontagne's Till the Sun Turns Black.  I also purchased a bunch of other CDs using this thread.  I've attempted to listen to Kings of Leon's Because of the Times, but I found it unlistenable.  Perhaps I'll change my mind, if I can stand to listen to this again.

Arctic Monkeys, Whatever People Say I am, That is What I am Not

Death Cab for Cutie, Plans
Drive By Truckers, A Blessing & A Curse
Jerry Garcia, The Very Best of Jerry Garcia (obviously not new material, but a new release I think is great)
Mastodon, Blood Mountain
Nine Inch Nails, Year Zero (much better than "With Teeth" IMHO)
Son Volt, The Search
The Sadies, In Concert Volume One

Good list!  :thumb:  I'm glad to hear its better, as a NIN fan, I still didn't like WT...thought it was teeny bopper goth and not his usual industrial masterpiece.

Year Zero is WAAAY better than With Teeth...your gonna like it I bet  These lists are hard for me to pair down...For example, I can't believe I forgot to include Thom Yorke, The Eraser in my list. :duh:

Was Thome Yorke, this year?  geez... I am getting everything mixed up.   I thought Postal Service was this last year because "such great heights" appears on Plans in different form, which was release last year.

Anyway, it too was a good album, although not tippy top my list, still solid.

Josh, I THINK Thom Yorke's was last year?  I'm looking forward to the new Radiohead.  Last I heard, it's now gonna come out the end of this year.

Airborn, just how good is Son Volt's latest?  Jay Farrar's solo works were a bit lacking. . .I'm hoping this one makes up for it.  A friend told me it's pretty good.  I'm looking forward to getting it. . .and hopefully soon.  My list of CDs to buy is getting longer and longer. . .I've only bought 2 CDs in the last. . .well. . .in many moons, due to crappy circumstances.
