Tube rolling... ease/headache?
« on: 22 Apr 2007, 03:29 pm »
just thought this would be fun since a lot of people own tube preamps,  how hard or easy is it for you to tube roll?
i have the belles 21a tube preamp and have to remove 11 screws when i want to try a new pair of tubes

My ASL preamp very easy as all the tubes are exposed.  My Monarchy SE-250 monoblocks not so easy.  A total of 16 screws.  Thats one reason I haven't done any tube rolling on them yet!

I do not need remove any screws all since I have owned my SEA 8608 Reference tube preamp. The only removal is swapping the a pair of Amperex 8608 white label with a pair of PQ orange label which are more musical. I suggest you not to roll tubes regularly. It might cause microphonics or socket loose.

My ARC SP-9MKII looks pretty easy to disassemble...but I should have another year or so left in the 6922 before I have to worry about swapping it.

My amps are totally open, so none :)

In my case, (6) screws to remove the top. I just left the top off for a few weeks while I played around with tubes.

Also, in my case, the stock tubes wound up back in the preamp. Some did one or two things better...but in the end, the stock tubes had the best 'overall' balance and low noise.

(in my case, the stock tubes are NOS)

I had to remove 12 screws for my BAT 31R . After I put in the new tubes I just left the cover off.

What a timely thread!
I have never opened my Musical Design SP2B.  The 2 tubes shine thru a little window just like the Odyssey Candella.  Found out today that the tubes inside are Matsusita Nationals.  Ordered a pair of JJTesla to try because I was told that they exhibit great warmth.  Looking forward to trying.

What preamp are you using, WEEZ?
