My big monitor speakers are not air tight anymore
« on: 27 Jul 2003, 03:50 pm »
My big VMPS monitors have small leaks. When you push in say the passive sub, the other speakers do not move the same from one speaker cabinet to the other.

Careful inspection of the surrounds and coils revealed that they look ok (no obvious rot or breaks, etc.).

How can I EASILY identify where the small leaks can be, and then what simple patch / seal will work?

Thanks ....

use soapy water anywhere a leak might be possible, push in the woofer, and look for bubbles. . .

Well, we'll never see his trailer in "Better Homes and Gardens" or "House Beautiful"

So I would say that decorating might be on that short list

Who do I send the phone call BILL to from his 30 minute treatise on EVERYTHING but my question?

I felt like a fly on fly paper. I could NOT get him redirected - or focused - or coherent - or off the phone.

Psy ... I believe it was you who directed me to this ... this ... expert.

Send me your address so I can forward the bill. :D

Dear Sir -First I read that I was very  informative next ,you say I was not focused or coherent.I thought I told you to tighten all the screws holding the speakers and the back plate holding the binding posts .Anyone with average intelligence would
have done this first but you never did it.I have told this
to Psych too and was ignored.I told you sometimes  they come that way when new and sometimes vibration
loosens them.I am willing to bet that most of the members of this club have loose screws. If any are stripped either use a larger screw or caulk around the speaker.Get an AT&T card for 3cents a minute but dont
ever call me again you ingrate!

Chuck, you must admit that Hifiguy is an expert when it comes to not being coherent.  I wonder if he's ever considered a career in politics.

Checking the tightness of the screws seems like a wise idea. You also might use Chuck's idea of Mortite as a sealant between drivers and boxes.
I imagine there's some audiophile gasket that's available, but the Mortite is certainly cheap and should work (it's also intended to be temporary caulk, so it shouldn't glue the drivers to box).  It's a rather ugly gray, so I'd be careful in applying or else clean up completely after.
