Take a look at a Line 6 PODXT modeler.I have had plenty of Fender and Music Man tube amps in my day.Sold my amps and effects pedals and use the POD XT through some powered monitors. You can get about any tone you want. They are around $300 US.http://www.line6.com/

How have you gotten around the harsh drive? I have a basspodxt and the drive is always grainy and harsh when I turn it up. In fact, I just bought a sansamp bass DI because the EQ and drive knobs on that thing are tuned really well. I can't get my basspod to sound like that, although I'm keeping it for the non high gain effects and compressors.
