Guitar Amp Advice
« on: 18 Mar 2007, 09:57 am »
Hi Guys,

I am considering purchasing a Peavey classic 30 and i'm wondering what other guitar players opinion is of this product.  I like the tubey sound from the amp and i had a listen to a number of amps but nothing i heard at this price sounded as good.

I've been quoted $950au for the amp and i am aware it is a little cheaper in the states.

Best wishes

Rod

ps my electric guitar is a godin freeway.

Hi Rocket,  I have always been a Peavey Classic fan, good stuff.  It depends allot on what your going to do with it as well as what type of music your playing.  I have had the classic 30, 50 4x10, and 100 two 4 x 10 cabs as well as the Delta blues 15".  We played blues and classsic rock and I play a strat deluxe and a epiphone casino.  My favorite Peaveys are the Delta blues and the Classic 50 4x 10.  For some reason I never warmed up to the classic 30.  I think you might like the Fender blues junior better.  It just does so much more for the same money.  I have even had the classic 30 with the 12" extension cab and it was missing something.

Hi Rod,

My experience has been similar.  I tried a number of amps and the Classic 30 was one of my favorites.  I am looking for a small amp, so I did not try the larger Peaveys.  I agree with Guy -- the only competition I heard was the Fender.  I did not like it as well as the Peavey.  The Peavey 30 seemed to me to have a rounder, fuller sound.

How do you like your Godin?  I am looking for a P-90 electric and recently tried Godin's version (through a Fender Blues Junior).  I was pretty impressed, more so than with the latest Gibson P-90 models.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments i will have a look at the fender amp locally.  I'm not sure if the store that i buy from have them but i'm sure someone in perth will be able to help me.

I am an inexperienced guitar player and i am really enjoying learning as i have a great teacher.  I bought the godin because i like its look and feel and thought it was good value as it was made in canada and not a cheap knock off from asia.  Sorry for being biased but i like to support products which don't pay their workers a $1 a day and have good osh principles.

Thanks for your comments.

Regards

Rod

I have tried several guitar amplifiers, including Marshalls, Fenders, Peaveys and a German brand (which name eludes me now). The German one was very neutral but expensive. Then I tried this amplifier named Stillwater (www.sinamex.com) and found that it was great value for the price.

The old fender princetons are great sounding little amps, and should be around your price range.

Take a look at a Line 6 PODXT modeler.

I have had plenty of Fender and Music Man tube amps in my day.
Sold my amps and effects pedals and use the POD XT through some powered monitors.

You can get about any tone you want.

They are around $300 US.

As others have mentioned, the smaller Fender amps (new or used), are just about great for everything, excluding metal. Even then, if you're not in a loud gigging enviornment you might be able to swing it with a pedal. Sometimes you see Blues Deluxes that go for about $300-350. That gets you very nice, classic clean, a decent overdrive section, reverb, and enough power to gig with. Plus, the tweed just looks cool.

Hopefully not too OT.  How have you gotten around the harsh drive?  I have a basspodxt and the drive is always grainy and harsh when I turn it up.  In fact, I just bought a sansamp bass DI because the EQ and drive knobs on that thing are tuned really well.  I can't get my basspod to sound like that, although I'm keeping it for the non high gain effects and compressors.

I use an ART tube preamp after the POD XT and then into my soundcard and then mixer.
It adds a bit of warmth.
Actually I just find different patches created by others that are well EQ'd and developed.

Hi Guys,

The availablility of different guitar amps are very limited on ebay in australia as our market is so much smaller.  I had a look at the stillwater and it looks like an acoustic amplifier.

I'll check out the fender but it is only rated at 15 watts and i was hoping to buy a 30 watt tube amplifier.  I had a listen to the line6 guitar amps but i didn't like the sound.

I'll let you know what i buy.

Rod,
Lean on your audio background when you are shopping for guitar amps.  The difference between 15 and 30 watts is only 3 db barely audible, let me repeat barely audible!  We use to practice in my home studio which about 25' x 30' and with a heavy handed drummer I could chase everybody out of the room with the blues Jr, with acoustic foam on every wall and the ceiling!  Don't let the watts make your decision here, go for the tone.  I have sold my Marshall Stack TSL 100 and all my other amps and kept the Fender blues junior.  It sounds great and is EASY to lug around.  If you want to push more air (get more volume) add an extension cab.  If you really need more volume get a shure 57 and mic it.  Tom Petty and a few others use two, but only because they run it through a chorus pedal for the effect.  Tone, Tone, Tone, Find an amp you love, and IMHO one that is easy to lug around.  If your Young and are playing stadiums than the later may not be as important.  Bottom line a small buddy amp will be with you for life if it has your tone, the big rigs will come and go.  That being said a Blues Deluxe is about 30-35 watts and that may be your thing.

Hi Guys,

Well i've bought a Traynor 50 watt guitar amplifier.  Once again i am importing products direct from the states as it is so much cheaper than buying in australia.  The best price i could find in australia was $1550au and it is costing me $920au including shipping which is quite a good saving.

Here is the link:  http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180098532957&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:AU:1

I compared the amp to the peavey classic 30 and thought it had more power reserves and i think i won't have to upgrade it for quite a few years.

Guy, my son loves classic R'n'R and has a Japanese made Strat.

I noticed that the Blues Jr.s were made in the USA and now in Mexico.  Which is better?

Any tube's work better than others?  If you were buying a Jr, what would you look for?

Thanks
