Modern British Female Singers Invasion!
« on: 19 Feb 2007, 04:05 am »
Hey!

As a music lover and an audiophile who living in the US of A I do get exposed to the American music scene more than other for sure. :D

But somehow I’ve always find myself falling for music from the UK even though I get less exposure to the UK music scene. Have been like this since the mid '90 for me. Some of my favorite albums are by UK artists. I have to say that I’m very lucky that I’ve found all of the albums of those UK artists that I have now.

Anyway, with the American music scene of which today seem to be full of nothing interesting and other crazy trash like.... Britney shaved her head, Paris is now a singer :o , Norah Jones new album is boring  and etc. :? I took comfort in some of the UK music that I’ve lucky to come across. :D

There are two recent album that I’ve picked up that I would like to share with you guys and girls today.

The first one is by Corinne Bailey Rae. A very good vocalist with that R&B and soul music touch.

Numbers like “Like A Star” is just simply beautifully done. And there are other like “Cput Your Records”... it would nice if this is album is on LP vinyl.... and “Trouble Sleeping” are excellent. But I do pretty much like the whole album of which I could just let it spin from start to finish.  :P

The second is something completely different. Lily Allen “Alright, still...”

Came across this very late one night. Couldn’t sleep so I watch and listen to the VH1 around 3 AM and this saw MV of “Smile” I was hooked!

How to describe her style.... sassy with attitude, silly but hip, funky and fun. This is a great album. Kindna like Norah Jones of da hood. This album is so freakin’ fun for me. Number like “Smile” and “LDN” is just damn fun. But yes the whole album is good. Definitely one of my favorite fun album now.

So, there you have it my friends. Two new UK female singers that should cure the boredom of the American female singers scene like Norah Jones' new album and totally trashed Britney.

Anyway, if you are a fan of Norah Jones than Corinne’s album will be an easy transition than Lilly’s

If anyone know any other good modern recent UK female singers please share that with me here. There is something about these music from the UK that really get to me... maybe it is the British accent I guess

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

PS

Those Norah Jones fans here probably going to kill me reading this. But, yes I do own her first album of which is excellent and it is on vinyl

Joss Stone is coming out with a new release on March 20th, and IMO she's the best of the recent British female singers

Mmmmm, Katie Melua  :inlove:

I love both of her albums.

Anna Nalick is not from the UK, but she is also really good and I like Wreck of the Day.  I met her in Boston a couple of years ago and even got a picture with her (need to find it).  I've seen her live a couple of time and she is a lot of fun.  :)

While I like Joss Stone, I think she's sometimes hard to listen to.  I personally think she overplays her voice, sometimes brandishing vocal gymnastics for no apparent reason.  (Compare Ella Fitzgerald, for instance -- great voice but didn't show it off every minute into a song.)  Because of this, I don't listen to her that much.  Perhaps the new album will be better.

She is young! She was 16 on her first album, The Soul Sessions.  She was only 19 while recording her third album which will be released in a couple of weeks.

Count me as another Katie Melua fan.

A couple of years back, I have heard an album by Sarah Cracknell.  I believe she was the lead singer for Saint Etienne, another British rock outfit.  Her album, I believe was called "Lipslide", now that I look at it, it might be about 7-10 years old.  Her house sound is rather retro, 1960s-1970s pop rock.  Her voice is rather soothing and her melodies are how I say, mellow.  I love this album.  After her, I believe DIDO hit the scene and everything else about UK female singers just took off.

One of these days I will check out the albums that you are soooo infatuated with, Buddy.  For now, I got tons of CDs that I need to rediscover, instead of purchasing more albums.

Hey!

Oh! yeah.... I have Saint Etienne's first album the "Foxbase Alpha" I really like this album. This is way back in the early '90s I considered them the early sound of which will become what we call trip-hop/electronica.

And yes who could forget Dido :D She is one of my all time Brit female singer :D I have both of her albums on LP vinyls. aa

Bemopti123 I think you might like Corinne... so do check her out. Especially play through SET and Single Driver speaker.

Also, yes I have to check out Joss Stone out for sure. Thanks guys. :D

Take care,

Hey!

Good one! I should listen to these on your system with your Neat, Naim, Rega, and Roksan

That's funny :D Is just happened that the chopping board I've used to make my FrankenRega is actually "Made in Thailand" :o Seriously!

So, you are right is it really Brit-Thai! A combination of PRaT from Brit side with fun, delicate subtleties of Thai.
