The $300 Squeeze Box is such the obvious choice (if you're even half way computer savy). Tons of features and no moving parts. Down the road a 2nd one could be modded to provide cost is no object sound and you'd have access to the same music from a 2nd location in the house.
2nd choice is the $150 Oppo 970 universal player. With the popularity of DVD players and now music servers (like Squeeze Box) its getting harder to find CDPs in any price range.
3rd choice is checking out Audigon (for used). I'd avoid anything more than 2 or 3 years old so that you're not back with the same problems you have now in a couple of years. Friends that work in audio shops report huge graveyards of some of the most recommended as used CDPs (some of those are going on 10 years old now).
The Marantz and Sony CDPs should be relatively reliable.
