Budget preamp advice needed
« on: 17 Feb 2007, 02:55 pm »
Hi there,

I'm slowly building my system and need to address the weakest link -- the preamp.

I am using the preamp out plugs from an old Luxman R-113 receiver to route my DAC to a Bryston 2B-LP and then out to Paradigm Studio 20s.

I'm not happy with the Luxman and would like to buy a starter separate preamp.

However, my budget is very limited at the moment so I'm hoping for recommendations for cheap preamps. I'm currently considering something in the range ($150-$300) of a used Rotel or NAD preamp or preamp/tuner. Have also looked at a dedicated volume control (Goldpoint, Axiom) but don't think I'm ready at this stage to give away the possibility of tone controls.

Anyway, I'm clearly a newby and was hoping that perhaps some of you long-term Bryston owners could suggest a temporary, inexpensive preamp that would pair well with the Bryston.

Thanks!

FYI,

I have a Bryston 4B SST and am using the preamp section from a NAD C372 integrated amp.  While it is not quite as good as a dedicated preamp (such as a BP26).  The NAD delivers 95+% the performance of the BP26.  I A/B both the BP26 and NAD C372 through a Bryston 4B SST at a friend's and could just barely hear a difference (and a difference does NOT imply an improvement, just a difference).  A NAD or used Adcom preamp is probably a good choice.

The speakers were VMPS RM/X with TRT caps and Bolder Sliver Wiring throughout (~$15K /pair retail).

Save your money,

John

Level of difference depends on speakers and cables used as well.
