I like TVC a lot. It made my system singing

. Therefore, I am curiously ordering the SS Reference one and hope the Reference will do more efficient to my set up.

David Dicks (from the nirvana site linked above) is a most "interesting character". I'd stay away (and if I say more he'll probably try to sue).

All the others can be good choices. I'd love to hear the smaller hemps.

Not to go Off-topic to much, But I'm seriously considering one... it's either a tvc or a simple SET tube amp( to replace my trends ta-10)

I have a Promitheus TVC and I do like its great bass, clear tone and operational simplicity. I'd be willing to sell it iof you're interested.

Awwww, i'm from St Louis and got a stiffy at the thought of buying large woofers with pics of the Arch on them! sad thing is that when i investigated them i received the same info JLM just posted...

Check out: http://www.commonsenseaudio.com -- they have many different drivers and enclosures you can choose from to match any budget. They have great customer service and will build what is right for your desires and needs. Give David a call.

They made me a pair of Lowther 2.8 Ambience speakers (2K) that I absolutely love -- best speakers's i've ever owned -- I drive em with 10 watts and don't even need that much power.

interesting comments about david at commonsense audio (also the nirvana speakers I posted about above)... looks like there might be difference of opinion... I did some some good feedback about the speakers either here or elsewhere but nothing about the person

my curiosity is piqued and since this is about speaker is there anything to report about the nirvana speakers??

don't want to get anyone in trouble though...

I was one of the people who earlier on the thread recommended commonsenseaudio.com (David Dicks). You can learn a lot just from a phone call. Give him a call and tell him what you are after. You can form you own opinion by talking to people directly.

Lots of other good recommendations have been given on this thread as well.

I heard Dick's speakers at a Decware audiofest with about 20 others. The floorstanding cabinet were made of 5/8 inch MDF and needed bracing (but had none, you could hear/feel the bass notes causing the cabinet walls to vibrate). This was the general concensus of the group. I tried to set up another audiofest with him as a demostrator, but he refused to leave St. Louis. His response to the one professional review I've found of his speakers was the most immature I've ever read. As I recall, there was no mention of damage to the speakers being reviewed. BTW from my understanding, this is a sideline for him, not his main source of income.

BTW, whats your relationship to Dicks?

When it comes to damaging Lowthers, I've pumped gobs of watts into mine and never had any issues. Damaging one of their drivers is pretty unlikely with standard break in procedures (your ears would start bleeding before you damaged the drivers).

I recommend Pi Speakers (www.pispeakers.com). Very nice speakers for not a lot of money. I built some of the 2-Pi Towers and have been very satisfied. I think you can also purchase them assembled from Pi.

I heard a couple of Pi speakers at the (sadly) last MidWest Audio Fest and was quite disappointed. The room was very slow to open and very poorly setup. The corner "horns" made horrible muddy/boomy bass and the 2 Pi towers didn't sound much better (but his Russian wife was HOT!). I lost a lot of respect for Wayne that day (that he would open his doors with that sound, not the wife). But previously I'd heard standmount 2 Pi sound pretty good. Since I listened to them the cheap piezo tweeter has been replaced with a Vifa soft dome, which should improve the sound greatly (piezo tweeters can be very hard to tame).

Klipsch speakers provide a very forward sound (typical of horn tweeters). That coupled with their high efficiency make them best suited in very large rooms. Unfortunately they have managed to squeeze into the mass market that doesn't fit them and since Paul Klipsch's death they gone even farther down the mainstream road into small HT and PC markets. What I mean by "unfortunately" is that the high efficiency designs especially those with horns synergize best with small tube amps (THE traditional old time high-end amp/speaker pairing) that aren't available from mass marketers. The result is they are rarely shown to their best advantage. Note that most consider their efficiency ratings to be somewhat optimistic.

I'd seriously look at the Bob Brines LT-2000 with Fostex FE207E drivers. (I'm very pleased to own the first pair of his FTA-2000 speakers.) I'd recommend the flats kit (less likely to be damaged in shipping and save money) for $175. The two 95 dB/w/m drivers will cost you $180 from Madisound. You'll need a strap clamp, glue, and then pick your finish. All this can be done in an apartment.
