Need power srtrip recommendations for under $100.
« on: 15 Jan 2007, 03:52 pm »
I'm looking to upgrade my cheap power strip to something better for under $100. This is to be used with my PC setup and Soundquest Sq-84 tube integrated amp. So far I have considered the tripp lite isobar 12 ultra http://www.provantage.com/tripp-lite-isobar12ultra~7TRPS00Q.htm and the Hammond (1584T8DH) hospital grade power strip. http://www.hammondmfg.com/1584h.htm. Any opinions on either strip or other recommendations will be much appreciated.

Thank You.

How about the Eichman eXpress™ Power Strip from parts connexion with a Signal Cable PC?

Bri, have you read this thread?

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=35461.0

The Tripp Lite Isobar Ultra is one that Dan recommends.  I thought I'd give it a shot.  I scouted around on eBay and made a "best offer" on two Isobar 4 Ultras (supposed to be "gently used" - we'll see ).

Anyway, I snagged 'em for $3.50 a piece (provantage.com's got 'em for $34.39 new).  Add some shipping costs and it's still got a sweet deal if they're in decent shape.

Good luck with your search!

The Tripp Lite Isobar's are great...EMI/RFI rejection is on top of surge supression...hard to beat, especially for the price.

I just picked up a Tripp Lite Isobar Ultra 4 and 6 outlet suppressor, each for under $10 on eBay.  Thanks for the recommendation, I was going to buy a more expensive Brick Wall, but let's see how these work out.

Looks like I will be getting the Tripp lite isobar 12 ultra then. I like the added insurance policy and the 12 outlets. This happens to be the one that Stephen from Quest for Sound recommended to me. When I said PC I meant my computer two channel rig. I do need to upgrade my Sq-84 power cord and will probably end up with one of Stephens own Sound Quest power cords http://www.natdistribution.com/soundQuest.htm#nat_powercords or a used VH Audio cord.
Thanks for the help guys. :D

Later.

Bri, this looks like a nice deal!  Appears to be the Tripp Lite IBAR12 that provantage.com has for $81.72 new:

http://www.provantage.com/tripp-lite-ibar12~7TRPL13U.htm

The eBay seller has good feedback and a number of transactions.  Says he has 19 units for sale in "excellent condition".  Even with the shipping costs, you're still under 40% of provantage's already low retail pricing.  Note also that Tripp Lite provides $25,000 lifetime insurance coverage for connected equipment with NO WARRANTY CARD REQUIRED FOR COVERAGE!!   :thumb:

Ask this seller to select the pick of the litter for you and wrap it up!

Indeed, the EBay offering seems quite attractive. But a potential purchaser should note a couple of points.

1. You'll have to replace the twistlock plug with a standard NEMA 5-15 plug.
2. Even if that insurance policy actually covered non UL rated connected components (which the great majority of high end components are not) the very act of replacing that plug will invalidate whatever 'insurance'.

Regardless, it appears very attractive.

I’ve used power conditioners, Power regulators, I had the Furman Reference IT-15 and stuff similar to the ones posted here in our old studio.

This PS Audio Juice Bar sounds best. Its all I use now.

How do I replace the plug and what Nema 5-15 plug do you recommend? How about something like this? http://www.drillspot.com/products/42173/HUBBELL_HBL5266C_Plug5-15-NEMA15-A?s=1

Thanks.

For anyone interested I scored the isobar 12 at the minimum bid of $29.99 shipped. I also decided on a Marinco 8215 Hospital grade plug from www.partsexpress.com.  Not a bad deal for under $45 considering the isobar lists for $150. A friend who happens to be a certified technician is going to swap the plug for me.

Enjoy.
