Hey!
Hmmm.... I don't own or have experience the Gallo and I'm not sure if I understand your problem. But let's see...
So, you are hearing sound coming out of your mid while the sub amp is on alone while the main amp is off right?
Okay, if my memory served me right I've read a bit about the Gallo 3 speaker and that the speaker is not bi-wire able but with the woofer on those speaker have a second voice coil that suppose to be connected to the sub amp via a second set of biding post. I assumed that this is what you have.
With that I think what you are hearing coming from the mid is really a signal from the first voice coil that is generated by the movement of the second voice coil that is connected to the sub amp. This is very simple to demonstrate. If you have two speaker and you connected them together + to + and - to - of each other... when you move one speaker the other will move too.

So, I think this is why you are hearing the sound coming from the mids.
As for the main amp blowing up the channel.... I'm not sure if this is the cause. But it is possible that the sub amp is feeding back the signal to the main amp. Not sure

But I could tell you that what Gallo use is a very strange way of connecting the sub amp of which I've never seen before. I don't know any other speaker that have this sub connection scheme... but I could be wrong.

Anyway, hope this help... and maybe someone here with more technical background could fill in on this... well because I could be wrong on this

Take care,
Buddy
