Since the days of the IRS, bass columns have been positioned behind the mid tweeter array.  Due to the time delay inherent in the 24 dB crossovers of the powered bass columns, they should optimally stand well in front of the main speakers.

Not that this is how most people will set them up.  The idea of bass behind the mids is so well ingrained most audiophiles default to this arrangement without thinking.  Fortunately the ear is relatively tolerant of straight delay (as opposed to phase shift), so there is a fairly wide range of placement options available for the columns.

I am really glad to hear that.  Just a few months ago I found the best location of my bass towers are to the outside of the main mid/treble towers by about 1 foot, and forward of them by nearly that amount.  Previously I had always had them more to the rear as suggested in the manual.  I was concerned that having them forward would close in the width of image, but instead it remains wall to wall when the recordings called for it.

Well, there goes my idea of building Linkwitz Orions.  These new speakers from Brian are too cool.  How tall are they?  Now, if I just sell my RM40s and RM30C...

Hi Bob,

One of the best "unkept" secrets in Audio.  Hard to keep a secret with me around.

The RM v60 is 68" high.

Bob,

Hope you have some cash saved.  You will need it after you sell the RM 40's and RM30C since the list price for the V-60's + 1 of the new subs is over $10k.

For 10K I have a feeling they're a knockout kick ass deal for the sonic and aestetic quality you get. With a pair of the new high excursion 15" subs (18mm Xmax) with 2" thick walls and this design the competition has a very serious contender on their hands.

These are my new favorite speaker in the looks department.  I'd really like to see that Piano Gloss Rosewood in person.  With the new options of any wood finish you want it will be interesting to see what people come up with.

Beautiful pics Jim - Hope it is posted on vmps site.

Brian, this is a wonderful innovation and a total K.O.  :thumb: . As usual you are underpricing it  :green:. New website, new speakers, fantastic finish- I dunno what others can criticize on VMPS now :)  aa

Dumb questions

-For room placement what would be your preferred recommendations? (i.e. x ft from back or side walls)
-Dimensions of new Sub required to massage the bowels..? ;)
<From above questions kinda figuring out what would be approx minimum room size for them to kick ass>

-What about center channel  :P

Cheers,
Kishore

At CES our demo room is 14x19' and I predict they will do fine in there.

Since the VSS parametric EQ allows you to eliminate the worst room mode I should think the RM 60 will do well in any sized room, at any distance from back or side wall.  Flexibility was built into the system and it should adapt well to any environment.  The "big speaker syndrome" doesn't apply here, as you can always substitute a physically smaller lowbass source (such as our Dedicated Sub) in place of the VSS or VLA.

From you, John, I'll take a trade.  You and the Met looked and sounded great on Letterman, how did the premiere of the new production go?

Are you singing in Verona this summer?  If so we'll be there.

That is a bit much!  Sadly, I'm doing nothing but paying off debt from getting married and the honeymoon. My next purchase will be two sub amps to replace the dead QSC 3402, then a projector and screen.  After that, I'll think about doing something with speakers.

Bob,

Brian mentioned in the other thread:

To make the deal even more attractive there will be a tradeup option for
current VMPS owners so that you won't have to hassle the Audiogon
scene.

I don't think any details were announced, but I'm sure others are wanting to know as well

I believe the first market for the RM 60 will be RM 40 and RM 30 owners and we need to make it easy for them to step up.  I am meeting with dealers at CES and we will work out a plan to give potential RM 60 users the ability to trade in their speakers at close to market value (depending on age and condition).  The tradeins will then be brokered either as-is or with factory updates to new buyers at substantial discounts.  That way the value of systems in the field is maintained and the used market isn't flooded with castoffs.

As for pricing, I think the high value of the RM 60 is readily apparent even to the casual observer.  Its bill of materials amounts to at least three times that of the most commonly found $15,000pr speakers, and its sonic performance will equal or surpass the best the planet has to offer.  I feel there is little point to a statement loudspeaker no one can afford, regardless of how it sounds.  Plus there is a lot of good competition now, at all price points.  To be successful a new product must stand out in many ways, price/performance ratio included.

Sounds great Brian, thanks for the offer and will keep my ears open to it!!!! .......it all went very well...they sold out the last 4 performances, inc. standing room!  There will be more performances in the spring, including one that will be televised live in selected movie theaters around the country and overseas, somewhat like a live rock concert. You pay one price, prb around $15-$20 and you watch it on a large screen with surround sound...hey Brian..they should use your speakers!! :)  Not sure about Verona at this point, but will keep you posted!

Happy Holidays to all!
