Melodic Metal groups

Among the usual audiophile stuff I also like to listen to Metal.
I don't like gravel eating screaming and evil shit, I like great sense of melody and a sense of groove and atmosphere.
Nightwish, In Flames, Sonata arctica and others, Epica Kamelot... (I'm from norway, the origin of metal...)

What I have noticed is that most metal sound good enough on normal budget systems.
Metal can sound utter crap on a better system, but when you get up in to the upper echelon of
replay they start to show off a sometimes fantastic sound again.
And a tubed system can rock so groovy you wanna flip!

I think this is because of the sometimes incredible complex waveforms that are forced through your system.
Square waves are not your average Jazz systems favourite music...

So anyway.
Do anyone have a good metal album they would like to tell about? (yeah... I have kind of blue too...Duuh!)

I have always found Megadeth to be very melodic.  Dave Mustaine's axework is amazing.

This genre is way off my beaten path but I like Extreme.  I think they are musical.  I also like Marc Bolan and T. Rex if this band qualifies as metal.  I also got to like Def Leppard on account of my wife being a groupie.

I totally agree with you on the non melodic gravel eating screaming evil shit.  It’s absolutely mind boggling as to what can actually pass for music now a days.  No wonder society and kids in particular are so fucked up.  I've never been much of a metal head, but these two have my vote...

Tool - "Ænima" I couldn't get into Lateralus, it was too much like art rock and not enough edge.

Linkin Park - "Meteora" I didn't like it at first but it sure grew on me.

Around 1995-6-7? there was a group in norway called Schaliach.
They existed for a very short time, and I belive they only ever released one small album.
The group were made up of only two members. Hence the album was a studio effort.
I believe they held concerts with extra members.
But this album is a masterpiece. The melodic quality of this group was out of this world!
The drummer is recognized as one of my country's best musicians.
The guy can play anything! And excels at most of them. quite unique!
The album was called Sonrise. Just a few songs... But woah!

Its a must have for a metal fan this album!
It was re-released in 2005.

I'd add Helloween, early Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Joe Stump.

They're hard to categorize: maybe "funk metal" comes closest.  But however you describe them, Living Colour is an awesome band, and certainly melodic.  It's rumored they have a new album due out next year.

Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream" or "Gish" - these were mainstream but if you don't have them they're both stupendous.

Soundgarden "Badmotorfinger" - Ditto.  If you don't have "Louder than Love", you're missing one of the greatest examples of that era's hard-rockin' music.

Broken Social Scene "You Forgot it in People" - Off the beaten path but shouldn't be.  This one's a nicely blended collection with many changes of speed and mood.  Some of the tracks are highly melodic, but are followed with edgy guitar work.  Something for everyone and this time it's not a bad thing.  I guess not really "metal", per se.

Nice thread!

Jane's Addiction "Nothing's Shocking" is an utter classic too.

Good call on Three Days - That will absolutely stand the test of time.  I like a little heroin in my rock music it turns out.   :D

I like a lot of 'metal' but I am not into death metal.  There are a number of great melodic metal bands out there if you look around.  I agree with a lot of recommendations already said like

Tool - pretty much anything they made, check out 10,000 days
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia & Deadwing are their two harder ones
Dream Theater - Six Degree & Train of Thought are pretty good
Broken Social Scene is really good but I don't think of them as metal.
Opeth - Damnation
Therapy? - Suicide Pact; You First   (this is wacky stuff but it is fun and melodic)
Faith No More - any of theirs, but Epic is such a great album.
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
Megadeth is a great recommendation, also Soundgarden & Smashing Pumpkins first two (thereafter, not my favorite).
Rage vs the Machine - self titled, although I wouldn't call it melodic it is definitel worth checking out.

Liquid Tension Experiment
Black Light Syndrome

Both of these are Magna Carta records releases and they have a lot of what IMO is melodic metal

You (Imperial) may be already familiar with some of these bands given your preference for In Flames, Sonata Arctica etc., but I'll list them anyway for their melodic, mostly undistorted vocals.

Blind Guardian "Nightfall In Middle Earth"
Skyclad
Lord Weird Slough Feg (now called just Slough Feg, they have a strong celtic bent, lots of melodic ideas)
Devin Townsend's numerous projects are usually very interesting
Katatonia
The Gathering
Warning "The Strength To Dream"
Candlemass
Count Raven
Ras Algethi "Oneiricon:The White Hypnotic" (another one-off, single album band)

He's right, before I heard my first metal album I was a model student, got straight As and was an Eagle Scout.  Now I've served over 10 years in and out of prison for various armed robberies, assault, kidnapping and the like.  I've killed over a dozen women throughout the midwest but luckily I learned a lot about forensic evidence by listening to Carcass, Cannibal Corpse and Macabre so I've covered my tracks quite well.  Sometimes I wish I never would've pressed play on that horrible, horrible music.  My older brother also had a similar decline, although since he was into Aerosmith, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin he only got two years for holding up a liquor store.  I think it was the less screamy vocals that saved him.

NathanM, you should not say such here!
If one were to believe you, that would not be good for you!
Have you not been in the slammers long enough?
:nono:

Dude, there are more heavy albums on the Christian scene than on the other scene!
Get a few of those albums if you are so influenced by this thing that ails you!

Check out Extol. One of the members of Schaliach ventured there.
Amazing stuff! The best album by far is undecieved  :D!

The darkness in some of the music that one can listen to is evil, no doubt about it.
One needs to be made free from this! Sometimes one can not do this oneself!
Dude, God can set free!

NathanM has a slight tendency toward sarcasm and is one of our more colorful members.  He's one of the few whose posts I read even if I'm not remotely interested in the topic.

Keep it up, Darkskiesbrotherman.
