Miklorsmith,

I think you might have been selling Imperial a little short.  I thought his earlier reply was the most wonderful, straight-faced response you could offer to Nathanm's dripping sarcasm.  I mean, it doesn't get much better that the suggestion than Christian heavy metal might provide the road to salvation!

I don't know what Extol sounds like, but I will admit I wanted to buy it just for the cover art.  I'm referring to the one with the guys on the see saw or something like that.  It looked great.  Everyone knows there's really only ever been ONE good "christian-ish" metal band and that's Trouble.  :P Wait, scratch that, I almost forgot about Realm.  (good luck finding that, though)  But I do admit to getting a few grins from Deliverance, Tourniquet and maybe Mortification.  (old defunct bands of course *sigh*)  Most of the time the really good Christian metal bands get TOO good (i.e. The Devil's Influence) and the number of times they must attend confession starts interfering with rehearsals, so they eventually have to abandon it for full bore secular rocking.

King's X is glorious!
Ah the memories!!!

By the way, I know the drummer in this band: http://www.thetriosphere.com/
This dude is very good! He's hero is Hellhammer (Mayhem's drummer...). Boom boom!

The guitarplayer in this band has been to Japan teaching a lot of the Metal guitarists over there.
A real strong melodic quality over this band!

I'm biased ofcourse , since I know the drummer. Its their first album btw.

I heard Rammstein for the first time at a catocomb rave in amsterdam.
going back to the 80's, I gotta say Riot, fire down under, does not have a bad track.
Some of the obscure Iron Maiden , x factor is pretty cool too. (albiet bereft of original members except the bass player)
Priest British Steel
Alice and Chains Dirt

TOOL: I like everything (except Opiate) from them.
APC: (A Perfect Circle) is very good. It's Maynard's side project from TOOL. All of their stuff is great but I think "the 13th step" is a good place to start.
Isis: "Panopticon" or "Oceanic" would be right up your alley also.

I also have the Isis: Panopticon.  Kyuss _ Blues for a Red Sky is good.

I like Tool - Opiate as well, but it is really hard and raw.

Failure - Fantastic Planet, not super hard, but hard and a fantastic concept album (like a really long dream).   Also where the Nurse song from A Perfect Circle - 13th Step comes from.

In Flames do give out stuff on Vinyl.
Because of their rather "heavy" mixes one needs really adept playback chain to really make this
group sing like they were ment to.
But I think that In Flames are one of the very great bands from sweden!

The album "Come clarity" is a real treat!
They do have a quite unique guitarstyle, and again I'm a drummerfan, the drummer from this group aint the best there is, granted, but he is really good to follow the mood of the melody. He plays like a rythmn guitarist!
I love it!

Take the cut "Reflect the storm", where he really does do a super job!
The drumtrack in this song really does make it a gem amongst In Flames work.
The bassplayer actually emulate the drums in some ways on this song. Its a real change of standards!

Really a vinyl to have!!! Superb!

Wow... I'm amazed, Thrashers in an Audiophile forum - who would've' thunk?!

I come from a similar background: used to be the producer of the televised 'The Underground Review' back in the 80's in Manitoba as well as the owner of 'The Underground Distribution' (supplied magazines and VHS concert footage to Records on Wheels, Sam the Record Man and any other store that would let me sell metal through their outlets...)

A great band / LP from 'back in the day' was Death Angel's - The Ultra Violence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Angel

(Their follow-up albums thereafter really sucked)  That particular LP had a certain kinda melody... ok, a real 'flow' anyway.

Music that was heavy, but with a little more melodic refinement included:

Cirith Ungol's - King of the Dead LP
http://www.amazon.com/King-Dead-Cirith-Ungol/dp/B00001R3NU

Fate's Warning's - Awaken the Guardian & The Spectre Within LPs
http://www.fateswarning.com

Anything by Merciful Fate (AKA) King Diamond - if you can block out the idiotic lyrics:
http://www.covenworldwide.org

I'm gonna drown out the "miss the good old days of flipping through retailer's LP bins, searching for that sign of metal purity: The Speed Metal logo" - from my senses by cranking up some Voivod (the second-last, self-titled LP is the best work they have ever done!
http://www.voivod.net/discography/03/index.php

Someone earlier mentioned Christian Metal: way back when ~ I once distributed cassettes of a DEMO tape from a band called Vengeance.  They soon after split up with their vocalist from that DEMO and mellowed out - however, if you EVER get a chance to get a copy of the original DEMO tape - - its heavier than anything you have ever heard: Think: Destruction + HellHammer + Slayer + Exodus + Creator - all very angry and in a recording session, singing about God!!!  It was sooooo heavy that when I demo'ed it for Records on Wheels, the owners would not believe that it was Christian metal until I made the guy read the lyric sheet that was supplied with the cassettes while listening to it!

It made Slayer & Sacrifice sound like the girl's high-school band!

Metal is good.
Outright devilstuff... thats not down my alley!
Singing about pure evil, is like putting you icecreamcone on the barbie for 1 hour, then eating it...
If thats your taste, then whatever dude!!!

Vengeance Rising, now that I like!  aa
They were called Sacrifice, then Vengeance, then Vengeance Rising.
By the way, there were two bands called Vengeance... at the same time.
One of them had a female leadsinger, the other did not.

Then both had male vocalists.

Trashers? Musiclovers dude, all musiclovers!

I heard a song last night on the local college radio station by Nightwish.  It was a female vocal melodic metal band.  The tune was pretty good.  I might check them out.

I'd have to second everything that 'Digital' posted.  Especially "Awaken The Guardian", that is an EXCELLENT album!  The songs are incredibly catchy.  I had heard plenty about Fates Warning and just picked that one up on a lark from a cheap cassette sale.  Very lucky purchase!  Gotta love Death Angel too.  I can't say I'm a huge fan of Ultra-Violence (I preferred Act III on the whole) but the high-pitched screams from "Mistress Of Pain" is a high water mark for blood-curdling screeching in my book!  And I bet there were no pitch shifters on that record!  I also snatched up Cirith Ungol at the same store once, sight unseen based solely on the cover art.  A bit campy, but still cool.  Thinking about pawing through musty used vinyl looking for metal is getting me all nostalgic...I haven't done that in so many years!  Thanks for the time warp, Digital! :)

I love this album but it is unlistenable on my hifi.  It is better in the car but not by much. Has anybody else had this experience?
