Best places to sell hi-end used gear?
« on: 5 Dec 2006, 01:15 am »
Sadly, I must sell my gear due to impending move. Where (other than here, Audiogon, and Audio Asylum) are good places to list stuff? Unfortunately, the stuff is pricey, although  well discounted to move. Am in So. Calif., but can ship anywhere. Prefer not to, for the safety of the gear (shippers seem to be getting terrible at not damaging parcels, even if insured.) Used Audiomart in decades past, but haven't sold anything in eons. Are they even still around (they were nice folks to deal with, as I recall.) Is listing in Stereophile or Absolute Sound worthwhile? Happy for any advice. Thanks!

Audiogon is probably the best place.

But you can always list here at AC for free and see what happens first.

Thank you for the assistance. Looked at Craig's list last weekend, both LA and SF/Bay area. Most stuff was very, very low-end gear. Didn't want to look like some snooty bastard listing what to most would seem ridiculously over-priced stuff (most CD players were in the $50 -$250 range; highest priced thing was a $2500 plasma TV, if I recall.) Should see if they've got a NY or Chi area list, too. On your advice I'll give it a spin. Why the heck not? Nothing to lose. I'll probably try E-Bay as a last resort, but I think it's as good an idea as any I've heard. They're a little pricey on what they charge, or so I've been told. Haven't checked it out personally yet, though. Will do. I really appreciate your input. Again, thank you!

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to list on Craig's, probably today. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the right person sees it at the right time. I really appreciate your time and effort in responding. Thanks, again.

Not familiar with Craigs list but IMO E-Bay is better than Audiogon because last time I listed with Audiogon the scammers outnumbered the legitimate responders about 100 to 1. At least on E-Bay you can steer the audience by your description of the item and your terms can be specific.

IMO, it doesn't matter where you list the equipment for sale. If the price is right or there is a high demand for that particular item, the buyer will be there.
Good luck with the sale.

Thanks F-100 and Weirdo. I'll give E-Bay a try after the listing is out there for 30 days w/ no response. Had an Audiogon offer $1,100 below initial listing price. Was willing to negotiate, but the guy only wanted to offer payment via "cashier's check", which is completely stop-payable, as we all know. When I insisted on cash on hand delivery, or check clearance before shipping (it's a $13,500 MSRP item), or any other method he might suggest that protected us BOTH (escrow.com, etc.) his response was a simple "I'll pass". So I suspect the observation about 'scammers' on Audiogon is probably quite astute. Thanks for the help!!

I think weirdo's remark that ebay is much better than audiogon is...weird.

I have sold a variety of items on both sites and can't say that I've had any significant (or maybe even insignificant) scammer activity on audiogon. a lot of people will email me and ask me to bid myself down but that's not scamming, it's just trying.

to me audiogon has been a great resource both for selling and for buying. for contemporary high end gear I wouldn't even consider ebay. but that's me.

Thanks BK. Like I said previously, I'll try E-Bay as a last resort, preferring the audiophile circles and sites for the immediate future. But that one response on Audiogon I got was just a little too strange for me. I wouldn't want to ship off a $13.5k SACD player and have the buyer stop-pay the check. Maybe he was on the up and up, maybe not. I'll never know (perhaps thankfully.) But I certainly do thank you for your response. Have a great day!

Ditto here.  I've not been scammed in either place, and have lots of transactions at both; but Audiogon is just a great resource for all to use.  At the new pricing that went into effect several months ago, it's not quite as cost effective as it once was, but still very efective at reaching the right hi-end audio audience.

I used to just list my stuff here, but expect to sell on Audiogon...but recently activity is up at AudioCircle and I have sold a couple items here (to my complete surprise - can't beat the price, either ).  The problem with listing here is that it is not user friendly...we have so much activity now that the listing do not last long in front of the viewer for any 24 hour period.

One day, when JohnR actually catches up with his sleep, it might be good to group the items into categories for all to research whats for sale...rather than scroll thru all to see what's avialable.

Anyhow Winston...I'd post on Audiogon and on AudioCircle first.  ebay, Craigslist and TheRecycler (in SOCAL), after that. fyi - Audiogon has been trying to get Videogon.com rolling for some time...they may still be offering free ads there if you're gear fits some category over there.

You might want to post it on audioxsell.com, they are the new kid in town but it's free :)

Thanks Chair Guy, F-100 and TVad4. Will try Audioxsell. Also Craig's list and Recycler. Why not? And thanks for the heads up, F-100 about Audioxsell, had never heard of that site. BTW: Fighting nasty flu right now, so just responding with "thanks" for all the helpful messages is somewhat taxing, but my mom raised me right. And now for that long-awaited nap........

I've had more than 100 transactions on AudiogoN and only a couple of obvious scam attempts. I prefer it by a wide margin over eBay. However, I've never sold anything over $3K, so the experience with more expensive stuff might be different. Honestly, AudiogoN has been a really fantastic method to buy and sell audio equipment. It's a fantastic community.

Enjoy,

You could also try Kurt at Echo Audio in Portland, Oregon. (www.echohifi.com). He's got a lot of loyal, long term customers and the hassle factor is exactly nonexistent.

I've bought and sold on Ebay and Audiogon and in both places there are flakes, angry people, scammers, and some staggeringly ignorant souls who have no business buying or selling anything more complicated than the gum they are learning to chew while they walk.

I've purchased almost my entire system on Audiogon and I've never purchased anything from Ebay.
