AC Homies,

It begins.  A rep from a local AV install company (the best, purportedly) is hanging a plasma on the wall in my great room to replace the 50" TV there now that I've wanted to get out of the way (of the music).  He put me in touch with the contractor they use for dedicated rooms and that gentleman is stopping by Tuesday morning.

I'd decided to use the "golden 1.6" ratio for room dimensions, with multiples of two (I believe you can do that in two dimensions).  7' ceiling gives 11.2' x 2 = 22.4ft wide.  However, that requires a 36' length (11.2 x 1.6 x 2) which is more space than I have available.  How decent acoustically could a 7x22.4x25 ft room be?

Alternatively, what would using 1.3 instead of 1.6 as a factor do?  I really don't need 22.4' width but 11.2 is definitely too small.  1.3 (x2) on both the length and width would be great.

I'm going to do some more research now, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Also, we're going to use the 50" Sony LCoS TV at least for now - no projector.  This TV is barely a year old and we like it.

The 'golden ratio rule' is 1.236:2:3.236

That would be 7' high x just over 13' wide x about 18.8' long

Another that might work well with the doubling is one of the Sepymeyer ratios 1:1.14:1.39

That would be 7' high x 15.96' wide x 19.46' long

You could also do the dimensions you tried but don't double the 'length'.  That would be 7x22ishx18ish.  You can swap the length and width and get 7x18x22.  That would be a nice space.

It seems that using other ratios is Ok as long as no dimension is a multiple of any other.  That I can do.  So I will probably do something like 7x13x18.  Wide enough for a pretty large projector screen for the future plus my large speakers & sub in front and long enough for two rows of seating with room behind for the rears on stands.

Our posts crossed.

Thanks for the ideas.  This link: http://www.axiomaudio.com/roomacoustics.html gives the ratios differently but no matter.  Both of the dimensions you give are nearly ideal!

I'd go wider if you can.  Large screen + large speakers = speakers close to side wall and lots of SBIR issues in the bottom end.  Plus it also lets you have more seats farther from the side walls.

I'm wondering if it's easier/better/cheaper to build walls coincident with i-beams or not.  My basement has a beam 14.4' from the outer wall.  This would work well as the width, leaving the length to my discretion.  Somewhere around 21' to fit the formula, I think.

I'll see what the contractor says on Tuesday.
