Hawthorne Silver Iris OB
« on: 11 Oct 2006, 09:18 pm »
Hello guys
Just wanted to drop by to tell you about my new purchace of a pair of Hawthorne Audio Siler Iris OB 15" Coaxials.
As a relative new guy to the world of audiophile, I have limited referance to "what sounds good", but these are amazing drivers. They were delivered 2 days ago and are sitting propped up on top of the boxes they were shipped in. Purely spectacular sound. I've heard sounds, and instruments that I'd never heard in songs before. Can't wait to here them baffled.
Having a hard time listening to music though, I get half way through a song before I think of another artist I'd like to hear on the new drivers.
Last night was "Wish you were here" from Pink Floyd. Scary in a few parts, had to open my eyes and look around the room like a scared little kid.

Anybody else heard these?

{Sorry, I originally posted this in the Gateway Circle first by accident}  :duh:

Hey Bob,
Great to hear you're happy.  Just wait, there's more to come once we get your
bass worked out.  BTW, thanks for reminding me it's been too long since I've heard
Wish You Were Here.  I just told my computer to serve up the CD for me, and
threw in The Dark Side of the Moon plus Animals for good measure. aa

Hi John, thought about putting Animals, in the player, but I'm just not sure I'm ready for "imaged snorting pigs". LOL  :icon_lol:
Although, Roger Waters special edition The Wall, Live in Berlin on DVD might be nice. Maybe this weekend when the wife and kids are gone for a couple hours.

Bob,

I heard them early on at Hurdy Gurdy Dave's.  Build quality was very good and the price more than reasonable with more bass than I'd ever heard from open baffles.  But I thought that the resolution was poor by audiophile standards (what the rags call "forgiving" but I'm spoiled with "the mighty" Fostex F200A drivers).  Perhaps resolution improves with break-in, but I doubt it.  Would make for a great speaker in a low cost/high efficiency system (for instance paired with Oppo 971 universal player for $150, Sonic Impact Super-T integrated amp for $140, and CAT5 cabling).

Last I knew Dave was going to work on improving the crossover.

Jeff,

The new crossovers turned these speakers into an entirely different beast. The early crossover rolled off the highs on the woofer way to soon. Having better source and electronics also helped.

I heard Darrel's speakers in his custom listening room. I can honestly say I've never heard a better sounding system anywhere, anytime. The music came alive and detail was supurb. My own room still needs some corner treatment, but isn't sounding bad at all. Really shows how much the room affects things.

Biggest problem I have heard of with the SI's is that people put them in to big of a baffle. This causes some mid-bass heaviness.

Dave :)

BTW, Bob's speakers have the new crossover, as have all the drivers sold over the last three months or so.

JLM, it's been awhile since you heard them if you listened to the old XOs.
If you get a chance, do yourself a favor andlisten to the coaxials again in ideal conditions..ie: burnt-in, good wire, room treatments, new crossover, proper baffle ect...ect... I think you might just have a change of heart.
I currently in the process of "baffle building/tweeking" for the Silver Iris'. These drivers are an obsession.
I've had mine for about a week, I've left them playing at night, and while at work to help the burn in, and are evolving quite nicely.
I don't know what the idea baffle shape/dimensions are, but from what I see, they are going to be incredible when everything is "right" (is it ever 100% right?)
I've not heard a Fostex driver/system yet that I would purchase. I don't want to make enemies, maybe the placement, room, burn-in, wire/cable, whatever wasn't right, but so far I think the Silver Iris coaxial is the King.

Bob.

You owe it to yourself to come to the xmas party at Scotts.  That system is by far the best single driver system I've ever heard.  It absolutely blows away a lot of multi-driver systems in so many ways it's not even funny.  There are a couple folks that have Lowthers/Fostex systems in our little clutch.  They all have their strengths and weaknesses but they've all opened my eyes in terms of what a single driver can do.

Hey Bob, come on out, let me ruin your life  If the 300Bs, Lowthers and Goodman subs don't get you, the Bolder SB or the turntable will :green:

HG Dave, after I get a pre-amp in here you "owe" me a visit (and please bring those speakers with you).

In my book, single driver speakers do not have subs or coaxial tweeters.   :)

Ok guys, you're on. (What's the date?) I'll bring my SIs and a CD or two also.
"Enjoy the music" is in Richmond Hieghts on Big Bend Blvd isn't it? Or is this Scotts house we're talking about?
Bryan, I'm most interested in YOUR room(s). That's what I'd REALLY like to see, specifically the treatments. I'm as happy as a "bug in a rug" with my drivers and new baffles, next goal is room treatment.

Jeff,

I've never called my coaxials a single driver speaker.

I'm building new baffles with a few new ideas. However, when they are finished, I still have no way to transport them. Won't fit in a modest sized car.

Scott, you know what I was thinking of,... "Music For Pleasure", on Big Bend Blvd.
I've never been in there, not sure what it is really, but I got it mixed up with "Enjoy the Music".

Sorry

I'll be there Scott

Just noticed I had posted in the Gateway forum, in the Christmas thread.

Hi guys
I wouldn't mind meeting you folks at Scotts' on the 9th. Have been wanting to say HI in person for quite awhile now.
By then it'll probably be the second time I've heard a tube system. (Decfest in less than 2 weeks will be the first).
I'm sure by then I'll have bought, designed, and build a pair of OBs fitted with a pair of Silver Iris Coaxials.
Might be a good way to make a good first impression.  :D

I did go to Decfest, and do have the OBs, So I should be able to make it to Scotts  barring "life's little interventions".

(I will need directions please)

Thanks guys
Bob
