All,

As you might already know, Olive has been developing a software update that will allow you to use a wireless PDA to view your music, control your Olive music server, etc.  Not only this, but you will be able to use your computer to do this as well (e.g. laptop -- to view your music and control it while you are surfing the web, emaling, or posting on Audiocircle  :icon_lol:).  I believe you'll also be able to do it with a wired Ethernet connection as well...

This software was supposed to be released last week, but it turns out that there is a delay because of the new iTunes that was recently released.  As you might already know, you can stream your music from iTunes on your computer to the Olive  as well, and now that Apple released their new iTunes, Olive is working like mad to make their new software update work with the new iTunes before they release it.

Hopefully, it won't be much longer.  I'll keep you all posted with updates as I receive them.  I think it will be well worth the wait.  8)

Best regards,

Vinnie

All,

I just downloaded the lastest Olive software... 2.3 PRO  :D

I am now controlling my Olive from my laptop.  Much better software, much better interface...responsive, clean, simple layout and easy to use and navigate.

In your web browser (I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0) just type in the IP address of your networked Olive and you have full control (like Slim Server, but less clunky).  You can also edit your entries, make playlists, and do just about anything that you can normally do directly with the unit.

Now I just need to order that Nokia 770 Internet Tablet:
http://europe.nokia.com/770

And it is already battery powered

Also, Olive organized the menus on the Olive with the new 2.3 SW.  Much more organized.  You can see the line-out level on the screen when you use the remote for volume control.

I'll play with it more later...

Vinnie

I emailed Matthew about the hidelfio upgrade and he said they are debugging it, and to expect the olive version later this week.

Makes sense.. .When I downloaded 2.3PRO the screen said it was connecting to hifidelio.com.

The Olive version might be 2.3.1 or something like that.  I'll check frequently for updates.

Vinnie,

Could this be a glimmer of hope for me in my situation as a blind person to have complete, or nearly complete access to the Olive?

If so, maybe I should leave my credit card at home this coming weekend and start saving up for one of these.  Hmmm, wouldn't that be too cool.

Jim,

Only the initial setup would require you to interact with the Olive itself, not the web interface.  It needs to be set up (IP address, router address, etc.) before you can use the web interface, but after that you should have all the control you need on the laptop  8)

As long as you software can read the Olive web interface, it should work out well for you.  I've give Olive a call about this.  Maybe they have a few customers in the same boat?

Please let me know if I can help answer any questions,

Vinnie

Cool, and can I assume that all that info is non-volatile?  I can always get help to get the initial setup done, but I really need to be able to independently do all the day-to-day stuff like ripping, tagging, selecting and playing tunes, playlists, etc.  Looks like this is pretty promising.

Sounds like a good idea.  As long as the interface isn't written to be too cute with lots of eye candy, poorly executed javascript, dhtml, and non-tagged flash, it should be workable.  Screen reader technology has become pretty good at handling a good deal of what's out there as far as web application interfaces, but there are always exceptions.

One other question I've been meaning to ask:  can the Olive serve to the squeezebox?  In other words, can an Olive be my main music server and also allow me to use my SB in the beedroom, office, etc., or would I have to use the Sonata when it comes out?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

I'm pretty sure that the Squeezebox needs to interface with Slim Server software to work, so the answer is "no."

The Sonata will be the "yes" for doing what you are looking to do if you end up with an Olive.

Best,

Vinnie

does  this mean that i can use itunes on a mac to control apple lossless encoded music off of an external HD? will the sound quality be the same as a flac file on the olive's HD?

if so, then are there any itunes setups possible on a PDA type remote where i can also browse using the album artwork? if so, i'll order an olive right now.

Hi kbuzz3,

I think Olive mentioned to me that you can connect the wireless PDA to the Olive without having to log onto the internet.  You just need to set up your Olive and PDA's settings for this.  I'll find out for sure the next time I talk to them.

Hi arthur,

At this time, Olive does not support Apple Lossless (or Windows Media Lossless).

You should give a call to Olive... they might be working with Apple on getting this.  I know they've gotten a lot of requests for Apple Lossless compatibility.

Best regards,

Vinnie

Just wanted to be sure that people know that the 2.3 update is *not* listed on the OLIVE.US website (they still show 2.2.2 as the latest version).  So you can't download and burn it to CD currently.  BUT, if you tell the unit to go out and upgrade itself over the unit, you will indeed get version 2.3.

I've sent Olive an email suggesting they get this update posted and take the credit!

Thanks to AudioCircle for making me aware this update exists.

OLIVE will have the "Official Launch" Monday, and it should be on the site then, with details and info about the new changes.

The update does reorganize the menus somewhat -- with changes for the better.

The web interface seems to work more quickly (it was terribly slow before).

But the feature I thought Vinnie said was included (maybe he meant a future revision) that  I really want is not included -- the ability to use the web interface to play music (as opposed to just editing the music list).

In this thread:

It sounds like John says it can do just that.

Odd.  I definitely have the update, but the web interface is basically unchanged.  I'll post in the other thread and see if John can enlighten me.

Thanks Ryno -- I was able to figure it out with your prompting.  I had created a bookmark to this location:

http://192.168.1.100/cgi-bin/index.cgi

which is the old main page (which still works).

If I just connect to http://192.168.1.100 -- I get the new page!

Awesome -- lightning fast, completely duplicates the operation of the front panel, and nice looking.  I have computers all over my house, so this I think will elminate the need for fancy remotes for me.  Exactly what I have been looking for!

And as you have found out, you may need to "cancel" your old book mark and redo it to get the new screen to come up.
