I'm headed back to the music store today. I'm looking for music on the same recording level as Kelly Joe Phelps ( Tap the red cane whirlwind) album recorded live.  It has a palpable factor that I haven't heard in most recordings. If you haven't heard it ..buy it today..absolutely a phenomenal recording!!

Any other types of music with the same palpability is also welcomed.

TIA

You probably won't find it at a local store, but The Blue Rider Trio albums on mapleshade are some well recorded (and good) acoustic blues albums.

www.mapleshaderecords.com

all of their CDs that I have bought are excellent recordings...  it's hit or miss on their artists though (in fact one of their recordings is so good that you can hear the woman's voice about to crack... it's painful to listen to in that respect)

GHM

Great!! I've located it. :thumb:  They seem to be out of the Preachin' The Blues. Is the Harp, Steel And Guts just as good?

Check out LiveOne by Tommy Emmanuel, available at his website:

Endless Road is another good one by him....

Actually, i prefer Harp, Steel, and Guts.

I agree with fajimr above on the quality of the recordings at mapleshade, but the hit or miss artists. You might check out joe stanley, the arc choir, drink small quartet, kendra shank, and sunny sumter, also.

GHM

Thanks Phil .. I'll order it today.

That's good to know gitarretyp. I'll see if I can find it at the store .If not I'll just
order online.

Man..you guys are a wealth of knowledge!!! 8)

I think they have a money back guarantee and if you buy 4 or more they are only 10.00 each.  Also check out their original sampler.... I'll second all of gitarretyp's choices and include Ras Mek Peace (?) an excellent excellent reggae recording- in the insert I think Pierre said it took a week to get all the mics set up to get the recording session right.

Have you had a listen to Ray Lamontagne?

GHM

Jim,
I haven't heard Ray Lamontagne. From your comments I need to. You mean $10 a piece from Mapleshade? I'll look around for the Reggae recording also. Is there a site for this recording? Never mind I've found the Reggae cd.

Thanks

I saw Kelly Joe Phelps quite a number of years back in Portland, OR.  He blew me and my dad away with his playing.  His acoustic slide guitar playing was unbelieveable.  We went out a bought an album or two of his, ones that were available at the time and were so dissapointed that it was nothing at all like his live act.  I will have to pick this one up in hopes it is like what I remember.

P.S.  I'd love other great acoustic slide guitar based music recs if anyone has any.

yup, great deal!  and I like the fact that I am supporting a small company.  Pierre has some interesting ideas on tweaks, which you can also find on the website.

FYI:  http://www.raylamontagne.com/

check on some songs there... I saw him live at the Montreal Jazz fest last year and he was great!  also saw him on the Austin City Limits concert which was broadcast.

Josh- do you have the Lead Me On Album?  I like it much more than his more recent stuff- that had more of the classic slide and stomp box- I was a bit disappointed to see him go in a different direction.

If you want to move towards more rock slide, look for Texas.  They got their name from the moive Paris, Texas and you can tell their inspriation comes from Roy Cooder.  Good stuff

GHM

Hey Josh..this one won't dissapoint you. It is recorded at two different live sections. I think one may have been exactly where you heard him live.

Jim..I can't thank you guys enough...You've all given me a whole new world of music to enjoy!!

By all means keeping coming!!

All the best,

Yes, it was all classic slide and stomp box.  Was quite amazing.   The album I picked up (gave it to my dad a while back) was something quite different and not all that great IMO.   I'll check out your recommendation.

By the way, the show was the annual Portland Blues Festival on the river edge.  This was quite a few years back, but my dad and I went to it each of 3 years in a row.  You would donate a few cans of food to the homeless and then picnic in the lawn, drink lots of beer and listen to some of the best blues acts currently out there.  Was good times!
