Recommend a speaker cable for my system.
« on: 2 Sep 2006, 02:13 pm »
Hi Im trying to rebuild my system on a budget and I need some help because I cant find my favorite Synergistic Research Alpha speaker cables, used, in the length I want.
Here is my system:

-JM Labs Chorus 706 (8 ohms, 89.5db sensitivity)
Great with drums, very detailed, sweet highs but sometimes bright.

-Monarchy Audio SM-70 Pro (25watts class A stereo, high gain version)
Sweet sound, good bass, warm with good not great bass)

-Luminous Audio Axiom (single input passive preamp)
Transparent

-Vh Audio Pulsars (cryo copper with gold eichmann bullets 1m and .5m)
Detailed sound, low capacitance, very good instrument seperation with good bass.

-Onix X-CD88 (same as Music Hall MMF-CD25 HDCD)
Very detailed sound with great soundstage and rhythm. Sometimes bright.

Now I need an 8ft pair of transparent speaker cables, for about $100 used or new, to make this system shine. I know I can always get better bass with a good power cable but I just want to get this system up and running. I owned this system with all the same components except the Onix was a Music Hall. Please help me enjoy my stereo again.

Hello bundde1:
I've had good luck with DH Labs speaker cable. Very good value.

If you just want to get your system up and running, quickly and on a budget, you might want to try the Home Depot extension cord option. There's plenty of information on the Audio Web sites concerning these cables.

I've used the HD cable using unterminated ends. It sounds pretty darn good! Add a nice set of bananas or spades if you want.

Enjoy,

Thanks TIC but not enough time to devote to stripping power cable. Maybe later when I have a workspace. Small apartment. Ive heard it sounds decent though.

The DH Labs is a good choice at your budget, but you can get a used pair of thier  Q-10 at close to that price and it is a noticeably better cable. Other used cables at $100-150 would be MAS Reference & Synergistic Research Sig.#2.

Have you looked at the Anti-cables?  I know people argue that they can make them themselves cheaply, but I didn't have the time.  Eight feet will cost you $85 with shipping and spades or unterminated.  In my system, I like that they are neutral.  They are unshielded but I can route them away from all other sources.  Friends and wife have commented that they are rather pretty; shiny red and sculpted around the back of the speakers.

I was looking at a ht forum and found that alot of guys really seem to like these cables and from the look of things they seem to be made well and don't cost that much.

I need 8ft cables and usedcable.com is selling a 10ft pair for $80 shipped. Thanks for the heads up though. Im scanning all the sale forums everyday. Does anyone know of any other reputable boards/forums that have good classifieds?

I paid almost $50 for one of these hyped low priced speaker cables, long ago.  Later, a friend gave me the cheapest Kimber bulk cable money could buy when he was upgrading.  There was an immediate and large improvement.  2,000 unmemorable (maybe 4-5 actually) speaker cables later, I use Audio Note Lexus.

It is hard to go wrong with Kimber products, not always the greatest, but always "good enough".

I like 16 ga. black colored lamp cord. It's about .11 cents a foot and one lead has ribs on it to keep the phasing correct. I use it on all of my AVA amps and they sound great.

I've been using Kimber 4PR for the past 6 years.  I just can't justify upgrading, as surely various other parts of my system are worse bottlenecks to performance.  If I do, I might step up to 4TC, but I'm skeptical that I'll even be able to tell the difference.

I have been using Kimber 8TC on and off for a long time.
It never fails to please.

Sounds great but I use wire coathangers covered with duct tape.... you've been duped into thinking fancy copper and 'phase' is important.

While I jest above... I'd appreciate it if you refrain from turning this into a cable debate... You can do a search if you'd like to see all the opinions on that.... no need to rehash.
