The Telluride Sessions - Strength in Numbers
« on: 13 Jul 2006, 06:42 pm »
I picked this up after reading the glowing remarks from a few of you here, and now it's probably the most played CD in my collection.

For those who know and love The Telluride Sessions - have you found anything similar you'd recommend?  This CD is amazing, and I'd love to find another (or 10) to compliment it.  I've already purchased Short Trip Home by Joshua Bell and Edgar Meyer, and though good enough to also be in heavy rotation, I much prefer the compositional style of the Telluride CD.

TIA,

-Jim

Hey Jim!
I wish I could tell you a dozen more albums as good as The Telluride Sessions but I cannot.
That is really a sweet one.
I stretched out and started buying from all of the artists on there, but that one has some real magic.
You might consider checking out Mark O'Connor's The New Nashville Cats or Heroes...
I'm pretty much a stoner for acoustic done well.
Darol Anger  :violin: I put up with those guys too, and if you haven't already plugged into his Heritage, you just drop what you are doing and go do that right now.
 :bounce:
I was dragging that one from room to room at RMAF when we met and years later, it is in my rotation as much as Telluride Sessions or anything else.

Like I say, I wish I had more, and if we are lucky, someone else will chime in some goodies neither one of us has heard...

Well, we can *hope!*

Regards,
DeadFish

Hi DF!  Long time, no chat!

I'll check out O'Connor's offerings and see what I think.  Listening to 30 second, 20 bit/sec soundbites on Amazon is no way to determine the quality of a CD, but I'll give it a try.

Darol Anger, eh?  Well, I *haven't* "plugged into his Heritage", so I'll check it out this minute.  From your description, it sounds like it may be the closest thing to a companion CD I'll come across.

Thank you, my friend!  I'll let you know how it goes.

Take care,

-Jim

You might try "Skip, Hop & Wobble," with Jerry Douglas and Edgar Meyer (who also play on "Telluride Sessions") plus Russ Barenberg on guitar.  Sam Bush sits in on a couple of numbers.  It's the closest thing I've found to "Telluride Sessions."

If you guys like that style of music, you might want to check out the offerings from Planet Bluegrass

Aw, gee, Wayne!
That site is gonna ruin me!

They have a *bunch* of stuff that looks tasty and I haven't heard before.  Some obscure duets that sound like they should be good!

Honest, Jim, that Anger album is something I've been chewing on for years and it has some great layers to be revealed with resolute gear.  It's a 'gold standard' around my house.

Keep 'em coming folks!  :D
With much appreciation from a guy that doesn't listen to radio...

Thanks for the suggestions fellas.

FWIW, I *much* prefer purely instrumental pieces (vocals don't do it for me in this genre..whatever genre The Telluride Sessions is) and I'm not terribly fond of traditional bluegrass.

So far, I've decided to purchase Darol Anger's Heritage (in spite of the vocals) and Skip, Hop & Wobble.  These seem to come closest to what I'm looking for, especially Skip, Hop & Wobble.  Though not as complex or involving as The Telluride Sessions, I think it would satisfy.  But since Heritage seems to capture more of the essence of my Gold Standard, I'll be ordering it, too.

Thanks again...and as DF says, keep the suggestions coming.  :thumb:

BTW, does anyone have a well-kept copy of Darol Anger's Live at Montreux '84 that you wouldn't mind parting with?

From what I can tell from the samples, it would fit in nicely with my new selections.

Uh, you haven't heard this?
It's pretty sweet, but I've only got it on vinyl.
Oddly enough, like the reviewer at that Amazon link, it was my first touch of Anger, way back when.  He's been eclectic enough for me to listen to a long time.  I hope you like Heritage.
Looks like you've got some great choices there, Jim!
I'm looking forward to Skip, Hop, & Wobble my own self.

Best Regards,
Bill

Nope...just the samples on Amazon.  Strange thing is, we have a plethora of Windham Hill stuff, but this one's nowhere to be found.  Bummer.

I think the two I ordered tonight (along with the new Pink Floyd DVD - totally unrelated) will be more than enough to suffice for now.  However, if you come across a CD version of Live at Montreux, lemme know.

Thanks, Chris!  Definitely some interesting selections you've linked.  I'll bookmark 'em for later since I've already exceeded my CD quota for the month, but I'm pretty sure one or more of these will find their way into my collection.  I've had my eye on the Ma/Meyer collaborations for a while now...I'm thinking August is a good month to bring 'em into the fold.

BTW, I ordered The Bossa Nova Years box set, but since the US Amazon didn't have it in stock, I ordered this one from the UK.  It was released by Verve instead of Polygram, but otherwise it should be identical (I hope).

I got the price past Kandy by asking if she'd like to have an early Birthday present.  Smart, huh?

Thanks again, my friend.

Great thread!  I also am a HUGE fan of that CD.  I never get tired of it!  I've also had some problems finding similar stuff -- at least that I like anywhere near as much, so I'll be looking at anything you guys suggest as well. :)

Another great one you might want to check out, Viktor Krauss - Far From Enough, with Jerry Douglas and Bill Frisell. It's all instrumental except for one Robert Plant cover where sister Alison handles the vocals.

Thanks, Gordy.  I'll do that.

If it has to have vocals, Alison is among my very favorites.  :thumb:

EDIT:  Checked it out.  VERY different...but not in the same way The Telluride Sessions is different.  Even so, it's on the "gonna get" list.

Thanks Gordy!  :thumb:

Like Double Ugly I'm not a big fan of bluegrass.  But a few years back I was heavily into downloading live concerts and ran across one from Strength In Numbers that absolutely blew me away.  With this album being a cheapie ($9.98 and eligible for Amazon's 4 for 3 promotion) it's a no-brainer.  Great find.

Anyone have any suggestions for three more choices?  Here's a link to the listing of all eligible CDs (DVDs and books also available for this promotion):
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/169396011/ref=br_bx_c_1_0/002-0299782-6504841 (note-507 pages of choices, prepare for some browsing).

EDIT:  Skimming through the list I ran across a live Mahuvishnu Orchestra album-Between Nothingness and Eternity (Live):  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000252D/002-0299782-6504841?n=5174 Anyone familar with this album?

Anyone have any suggestions for three more choices?

I'd start w/ Darol Anger's Heritage and Skip, Hop & Wobble.  After listening to samples of most of the suggestions, these two seem most similar to The Telluride Sessions (which makes it a somewhat educated guess at best given the length and quality of the samples).

FWIW, both showed up when I used the "Search in 4-for-3 All Music" box.  :thumb:

I don't know anything about it aside from the sample tracks, but that was enough to determine it isn't anything like the other suggestions in this thread.  That said, if you like it, and you if you decide to get the other two suggestions, you'll be ready for checkout.

PS - About that Strength In Numbers concert you downloaded...any chance of getting a copy?
