PS - About that Strength In Numbers concert you downloaded...any chance of getting a copy?

Let me see if I can dig it up, and if I can, sure.  The organization of the concerts I downloaded is not the best, but I should have copies of almost everything burnt to a CD (somewhere).

PS-there are some other really nice albums in that 3 for 4 deal.  One I've never heard, but love her other stuff, is Patty Griffin's debut, Living With Ghosts.  Or I could rebuy the old college era speaker blowout album, Edgar Winter Group, They Only Come Out At Night.  They have a bunch of Leonard Cohen, 70's Elton John, some Steve Earle, etc.

I don't know if it is the same concert, but I found a 1985 Telluride concert on Live Music Archives, posted as Fleck and Flectones, but predates the Flecktones.  Sam Bush and Mark O'Conner play as well with him, alledgedly.
This is same era of the Strenth in Numbers thing.

Here ya go:

If'n y'all try it and it isn't the same one, I too am interested in more by the same guys!

I'm in the process of downloading the lossless file, but just 'cause I wanna check it out.  Only Thump knows for sure whether or not the playlist matches his copy.

How 'bout it Thump...are they the same?

Some selections from the same genre as Strength in Numbers (except the last one listed) that may be of interest:

Bela Fleck: The Bluegrass Sessions: Tales from the Acoustic Planet Vol 2 (DVD-A)

This is an excellent compositional title, IMO. I am not generally fond of multichannel selections, but this one works very well, as you feel like the musicians are hanging around with you in your house while they play (the DVD photos help the imagery for sure). Includes the usual cast of suspects of mostly contemporary bluegrass, such as Bush, Rice, Douglas, as well as Vassar Clements. Good audio quality.

Bela Fleck: Drive (SACD)

Has a more banjo-heavy sound overall than Acoustic Planet 2 but does get input from the likes of Douglas, Rice, Bush, and O'Connor. If you can dig the Bela banjo, this may grow on you. It took me a bunch of listens to get over the hump. Excellent audio quality.

Sam Bush and David Grisman: Hold On We're Strummin'

Yes, this is mandolin-focused, but Bush does put many other instruments in his hands. Also a plus IMO that he keeps his mouth shut (mostly) for this title. Excellent audio quality.

Chris Thile: Not All Who Wander are Lost (SACD)

Chris of Nickel Creek fame plays his mandolin and is joined by the usual suspects (such as Fleck, Meyer, and Douglas). Not nearly as mandolin-heavy as the Bush/Grisman title above. Excellent audio quality.

Mark O'Connor's Hot Swing Trio: In Full Swing (SACD)

You guessed it; not a bluegrass selection. O'Connor is hot and fierce on a few of the selections. Guests include Wynton Marsalis and Jane Monheit, so yes, there are selections with vocals. I am not much into vocals these days, but I practically melted listening to Monheit do Misty. Excellent audio quality.

Thanks for the suggestions, Doug.  I'll be sure to check out the CD versions of your recommendations (I'm a HDD-based kinda guy).

Well, I actually tracked down the Strength In Numbers concert I have.  It's a soundboard recording, 559 MB in size as SHN (shorten) files.  I think SHN is fairly easily convertable to FLAC, but I've never tried it.

Those who are interested in this, do you have the ability to download torrent files?  If so I could make an attempt at hosting the torrent on a site like dimeadozen or easytree.  Or if you want me to mail you a CD with the SHN files we could do that.  PM me if you are interested.

Here is the text file that came with the concert:

I've never tried, so I don't know.

Do I need something special to download them?

EDIT:  Judging by the playlist, Thump's version do not appear to be the same concert DF linked earlier.

Is there such a thing as a free SHN player of acceptable quality?

Thanks.

A right-kindly offer there Thump, of which in some variety I would like to take advantage of.  I'll P/M you on that, should you get it to a d/l place.  By all means, does not look like the recording I scored at the Archive.
I've had no trouble converting .shn to .flac so far, as long as the original recording was sufficient quality.

Jim, you would want to convert the .shn files to anything convenient for you to listen to.  I don't know of any particular .shn players, as I convert to .flac for the SqueezeBox.  I would think there are converters for .wav or whatever is on cd.
Also, there are bit-torrent clients/versions to use to d/l torrent files, if I have my info right.  I've only d/l'ed a few things that way, but it wasn't rocket-surgery.

Thanks for finding this, Thump553!

Here's a site that specializes in concert tape trading, they have ten Strength In Numbers concerts taped between '88 and '92... thought it might be of interest...  http://db.etree.org/bs_d.php?year=1988&artist_key=314

I’ll throw one out there that’s been a fav of my since it came out and it’s recorded very well too. “Appalachian Journey” w/Edger Meyer, Mark O’Connor, Yo Yo Ma.

A little different from your regular Bluegrass, Meyer’s bass is just great in this CD.
My only problem is I have the SACD disc and can’t put it on my hard drive  :(.

IF (and that is a mighty big IF) I did it correctly, my concert is now seeded and ready for torrenting.  It is located here:

http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?p=390017&torr=true

Let me know whether or not you can access the torrent, I'm a complete newbie at uploading them.

Edit-the torrent seems to be working, as I now have two leechers.  After I uploaded the torrent there, I realized thetradersden.org is a members only site, but registration is free and the membership is nice.  If anyone has any trouble joining let me know.

Hey Thump,

It seems to be working, but it's gonna take over almost 15 hours at this rate (10-12 KB/s).  Is it supposed to be this slow, or have I missed something?

This is my first time doing the BitTorrent thing, so everything newbie applies.

TIA,

-Jim

That's pretty much the nature of 'the beast', Jim.

Mine says 2 days!  This is a 'I know about it, but never done it thing' for me as well.

Thanks Thump!

You guys might want to check to see if you are firewalled, as that is a bit slow.  But I will seed that till at least next Monday, so no need to worry.

Early in the thread someone asked about playing SHN files.  I use foobar2000, but there are plugins for most players.

Let me know if yours comes out okay, Jim.

Mine was downloaded already when I got up this morning, but it has some sort of file errors in it.
The checksums don't match and mkw utility sez: " Magic number missing!"  whatever that is.

The torture continues, but what a sweet carrot on a string to keep plugging at it!

(added 10 minutes or so later...)
Well, the surest way to success for me, is to admit defeat.
I tried 'MonkeyAudio' and it balked, but taking one file at a time, I got the files converted to a 'hopefull' listenable format.  It ignored the checksums, so as long as it plays, I'm happy at this point.  I've other music that didn't pass checksum checks either.
Well, they DO make sound, but of course no time to hear it all yet.
DID hear some recognizable stuff though, so once again Thump, thanks for the effort!

Regards,
Bill

Deadfish:
Wow, I'm not sure what went wrong for you.  I just went back and verified the file integrity of my original files using mkwACT, and I listened to all the files yesterday (albiet at low volume and with the AC blasting).

Why don't you move your original downloads to a different place (at least those that are corrupted0 and try downloading again?  I'll be seeding this through the weekend at least (barring a power failure).  Maybe try a different torrent client as well -I'm currently using uTorrent and enjoy it (make sure to disable DDHT first-many trackers hate DHT).

You can always play the SHN files in their native form without conversion using foobar2000.  I only convert when I want to burn an audio CD.

Let me know if yours comes out okay, Jim.

I awoke to a bunch of errors, too, but...seeing as how there were SHN files in the download folder, I went ahead and converted them to .flac files.  I've only tried the first 3 files, but winamp played them w/o error or consequence as far as I can tell.  I haven't tried the big rig yet - just the 4.1 Klipsch system on the computer - but the few sound OK.

Lemme check the rest...

I downloaded the files and had no problems. I converted them all to Flac's this morning (including adding all the tags) and I've been listening to them this morning at work and so far all sound good. Thanks for seeding this Thump. My BT client is still running, so it should be available to help distribute the files.
