I had a pop last night, watching a movie.  It's strange - I think the one second mute kicked in right after it.  The one second mute delay is obvious on other things, like switching in menus for movies and stuff. 

I still can't figure out why I never ever get pops on non-DVD content.

I too have the high pitched "POP" or "SNAP" when I press play, pause or navigate the menus on a DVD.  I only seem to get it when using my DVD player (I have tried the digital force to no avail).  In fact I returned the first player complaining of the noise.  It turned out that the new player (a newer model as well) does the same thing, so I am convinced that it is the SP2. 

I am going to download the new firmware dated August 4, 2006.

Hopefully it will work.

Is there a list somewhere of what else the newest firmware addresses?

The only thing that can cause 'popping' noises is if the component feeding the SP2 is loosing 'digital lock'. Most of the newer DVD players maintain digital lock on the output even though no signal is present.

The new software allows you to set a 'delay' when switching (on each individual input) from 1/2 second to 3 seconds in 1/2 second steps.

I flashed the SP2 to 1.05, and now I'm wondering where I have to go to enable the 1 second delay feature.   Is it automatic?

Hi Jason,

The code to set delay is 'CODE-0-9-3'.
It will show on the LCD display as .5 Seconds hit 'code193' again it will go to 1 sec and so on to a max of 3 sec.

I find the 1 sec setting works well with most cable boxes.

Hi James,

Had the "pop" problem last night watching LOST S2 on DVD.
I played pause a long time (phone call) and when i got back, sometimes the SP2 was popping, then everything was ok and then it started again...
My player is a european DENON DVD 5000.
Witch firmware do i have with my recent upgrade ?
Do i have to flash a new one and set the 1 sec setting you where talking about just up ?

Did anyone resolve this 'popping' issue?  I have recently changed my satellite box which gives me the option of an optical connection.  When using this connection I also get the 'popping' sound which is very worrying.  It mostly happens when changing channel.  It does not happen when I use the analogue connection.


PS.  My software is up to date....

The popping is caused by the cable box losing digital signal when switching initially.  Some boxes and connections seem to have more of an issue with this than other boxes or sources.  So far the boxes manufactured by Motorola appear to be the worst. It does not happen with other sources like DVD etc. or other cable boxes such as Rogers.

We have looked into it extensively and there is nothing we can do about it because it seems to occur in the Motorola box (strangely not all of them) right at the beginning of the signal change so it happens too fast for the SP2 (milliseconds) to ignore it. The DELAY settings in the SP2 can prevent it if the box losses lock after a few milliseconds.

The 'Digital input receiver' on the SP2 is a very Wide Bandwidth design (to optimize performance) whereas a lot of surround products us a narrow bandwidth receiver which tends to ignore the bitstream disruption.

Hi James, not sure to understand your last post (cable box?) My question on the other thread (sp2 fw) seems to be close to this issue (quasi only when shutting down the SP2). Managing the delay solves the issue? How to do this operation please?

I doubt you will cure this using the delay feature.  I've tried all of the increments without success.  I don't even have a cable or Motorola box.  Mine is a UK satellite box and I simply can't use the optical connection.  If I listen to TV through my SP2 I can only use stereo analogue because the noise created using optical is too scarey for me.  So, so frustrating.

James, using the 'save' function with digital lock, per input, is exactly the same as using the code 061?

NO -the save funtion is independent of the CODE 061 function. 

What happens is that when you switch inputs the SP2 looks for Analog signal first. If it does not find it,  it then switches to search for Digital. So 'digital lock' prevents the SP2 from looking for Analog first on that specific input.

Delay (093) and Digital on (061) don't solve the pop issue 

Better try to find with the sensitivity of sp2 with the shut down of my digital sources (the sp1.7 was certainly less sensitive).

HI All,

We are looking at this issue more closely. It seems to be an issue with some Cable Boxes out there. It appears to occur when the signal is lost for a short time.

Next week I will have some new software which will allow you to mute the signal when you change channels.  Send me an email to  jamestanner@bryston.ca  and I will send the software file and the instructions. It loads through the serial port on the SP2.

Has anyone experienced the clicking on other digital sources like DVD or CD?

I got a popping noise in all speakers only when I shut down the SP1.7/9B-SST.
I do not have popping noise switching between sources regardless if they are in analogue or digital mode (ie between DVD and tuner etc).
Though, I do not have a cable box...
