RF Interference

Hi.  I've been following this circle for a while.  In fact, I'm now the proud owner of a T-8 with a 260EX on its way (Thanks, Frank!).  You, the knowledgeable fans of AVA, helped make it an easy decision for me.

My issue isn't related to the AVA gear at all.  I decided to get my turntable out of retirement since my T-8 has such a lovely phono section.  Unfortunately, I get radio frequency interference (a problem compounded by the fact that it happens to be Pittsburgh's urban music station -- not my musical preference).

The problem is not in the pre-amp.  No RFI when the turntable is unplugged and no RFI on any device other than the turntable.  If I remove the cartridge from the turntable, no RFI.  In fact, the RFI increases as the tone arm tracks across the record which suggests to me that the arm/cartridge are acting as some kind of antenna.

Short of buying a new turntable (a possibility, but not right now), any suggestions on how to suppress the RFI?  The turntable is a Yamaha YP-D71 (one of Yamaha's best in 1979) with an Audio Technica AT15SS cartridge (again, one of the best in 1979).  I just completed a Grado Longhorn conversion in case the A/T cartridge was the culprit, and the Grado does the same thing.

Thanks for your help.

The culprit(s) usually relate to shielding or grounding.

If your arm has a grounding wire- make sure it is not loose. Also, check the interconnects for sound connection(s); i.e.- is there a tear or 'break' in the cable allowing RF into the system? Does the noise go away if you relocate the turntable to a different shelf? These are the most common solutions...

Welcome to AC; and congrat's on your new AVA gear!

Weez -

You da man!  Checked and cleaned all the connections.  Found one that was questionable and reset it.  Between that and re-routing the cables when setting the table up again, the problem seems to have been eliminated.

Just finished a two hour stroll down memory lane with some classic vinyl...

..glad to hear it was 'relatively simple' to fix. Usually it is, but when the easy stuff doesn't work, it'll drive you nuts.....

Again, welcome to AC....
