Lou Reed - 14 May 1974

No Hunter & Wagner by this point. So, the show opening Sweet Jane has a pretty cool extended keyboard and guitar intro.

THE BAND - A MUSICAL HISTORY

Imho, an absolutely essential box for any serious rock collection. Four great Canadians and Levon Helm exploring and expanding the roots of (North) American music.  Seems appropriate for beginning of the Vancouver Olympics.  Next up: Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.  Oh, Canada!

Scotthobby,

How's the sound quality on this new set? I've found that much of The Bands's output has been on poorly engineered disks.

It sounds fine on headphones which is how I've been listening (AKG 701, Keces headphone amp, Modwright 9.0 SWP SE preamp, Modwright?Sony 9100 player).  I recommend vinyl for The Band, BUT this set has a lot of previously unreleased performances that make it indispensable to me.

p.s. the booklet is very informative and there are many good photos too.  This is one area where cd box sets can shine. This one shines.

David Lang: The Little Match Girl Passion (2009)

Quote
Co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall especially for Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices, David Lang's The Little Match Girl Passion was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Setting Hans Christian Andersen's fable in the format of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Lang elevates the suffering of the little match girl with poignant, evocative music. Lang's piece is scored for four voices and a few percussion instruments, played by the singers.
