This Keith Jarrett quartet ...This album also has the dubious distinction of containing the musical passage that Steely Dan illegitimately copied on their Gaucho record.

What is that story?

The Pousette-Dart Band "3" (Three)

A little to folky for me but it was $.50 at double decker records

What is that story?

In the song, "Long As You Know You're Living Yours", Steely Dan copied the saxophone line for their title track to their 1980 album Gaucho. Jarrett filed a lawsuit against Fagen and Becker, who later claimed the musical passage was an "homage" to Jarrett.

This Keith Jarrett quartet is woefully under-recorded, having created less than a handful or so recordings to date. This particular effort from 1974 is mesmerizing and keeps me transfixed from the moment the needle glides into the first notes until the stylus finally rounds the deadwax.

I don't have it on CD so I do not have any opinion on the digital transfer.

Keith Jarrett: Nude Ants [Live] (1979)

You might want to try this album that includes his "European trio". I didn't have Belongings, that's been rectified.  :thumb:

Thanks for the message Robin. The only album by them I do not have is their Personal Mountains record. Do you have it?

As a minor note, the quartet's My Song record is included in Tom Moon's book, 1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die.

PS I have nothing against digital...

Nope, in fact Nude Ants was the only album I had with the "European Trio". I've got tons of his other stuff.

PS, I have nothing against analog.  :thumb:

Have a nephew in town from Bozeman, Montana. Tom Cook's a singer/songwriter that I'm enjoying from his collection.

Hmmm two different versions of this story on Wikipedia - always take wikipedia with a grain of salt..
Quote
"The title track was intended as a tribute to Keith Jarrett, and was originally credited only to Fagen and Becker. However, after hearing the album, Jarrett insisted that the track uses a part of his composition 'Long As You Know You're Living Yours', and threatened Steely Dan with legal action. Becker and Fagen were then forced to add his name to the credits and to include him in future royalties."

"Another lawsuit dogged the band, this time regarding the title track for the album. Jazz composer Keith Jarrett claimed that the song had been based on one of his own compositions, entitled 'Long As You Know You're Living Yours'. Fagen later admitted he'd loved the song and was strongly influenced by it.[29] Jarrett sued for copyright infringement and eventually settled for a sum of approximately one million dollars, the deal stipulating that Becker and Fagen keep the songwriting credit. Fagen later told the press that maintaining their reputations as songwriters was an important factor in the decision to settle for such a substantial sum."
