Son Volt, American Central Dust

Airborn,

What did you think of this new release?

I have given it a spin a few times and my initial impressions are positive.  While nothing Son Volt has released since "Trance" has lived up to that album from a musical or commercial perspective , I think this one could wind up being a close second after I get more time with it.

George
George,

Its funny you ask that, because originally I was going to post that this was my favorite Son Volt release since Trace, except maybe for Okemah and the Melody of Riot, which I just think really rocks and is my fave by Jay Farrar and crew.  Maybe it's the anti-George Bush sentiment, I dunno. :dunno:  Then I thought, nah....nobody's interested in that and this is a thread about what your listening to, not what you think and besides if somebody doesn't know Son Volt I should explain that the current band is totally different than the band that recorded Trace, except for Farrar, etc....Eventually, I talked myself out of posting anything except the album cover.  I think this is a long way of saying I totally agree that this cd is really strong and seems to be Son Volt's best work in a long time.  I've only listened a couple of times, but it seems to be growing on me, which is always a good sign. :thumb:

Thanks George.  Btw, I've picked up a lot of good music from your posts in this thread. :thumb:

I have most all of The Band's albums, but none of Levon Helm's solo work.  I picked this up based upon the positive postings here at AC and was not disappointed.  Hard to believe this guy had throat cancer.  I especially like his version of Garcia's "Tennesse Jed" that opens the cd and the original tune "Growing Trade" about the plight of small farmers forced to grow alternative "crops."  I might have to get "Dirt Farmer" now.

Grieg - Peer Gynt.  So-so sound quality, but the dynamics on the 4th movement, The Hall Of The Mountain King, is fantastic.  In my opinion, I think this performance is more emotionally felt than the more celebrated Leonard Bernstein (Sony) recording.
