Amazing how on hearing live music, one always sizes up their stereo to hear how it compares.  :thumb:

Amongst his best outings as a leader.

Quote
Although he possesses a notorious penchant for showy pyrotechnics, Carter is a staunch traditionalist at heart?this session highlights his poetic side, largely avoiding histrionics. A nostalgic vibe permeates the session, further reinforcing Carter's tough but tender approach.

James Carter, present tense

And now...

A 24 bit remaster of this 1960 live recording...the hi-hats sure are sparkley.

This is the second album by this name - first one was recorded in 1972. Since then he wrote a song called Back Home in Sulphur Springs, and he and his wife recorded this album over three days in a setup that allowed them to record when they felt the urge.

I have the original.  Whiskey Before Breakfast is a great album as well.

Cool - do you have any other good acoustic stuff? I just got a few new John Fahey and a Leo Kottke, and some others

I saw Norman Blake a few years ago at a local folk festival - got some good video and I think pics of him as well. Got him to sign my Whiskey Before Breakfast CD (used to have the LP in another life)!

I'm big Fahey fan and have just about everything he ever recorded.  If you enjoy British folk then I can give a strong recommendation to Bert Jansch's 1960s and 70s stuff, esp. Birthday Blues, Lucky Thirteen, Box of Love, and Moonshine.  I have them all on vinyl but most of his albums are available on CD as imports.

Awesome!  You're the first person I've bumped into in a while who even knows who Norman Blake is.  Amazing musician.

You might recognize this one (just arrived today) - amazing liner notes by John Fahey. You may know that John Fahey won a Grammy - with several other folks, for liner notes! (1998 for liner notes for Anthology of American Folk Music vol 1-3

Anybody down with The Shaggs?  Patti Smith Group- Radio Ethiopia (Arista);  Ketil Saevewrud- Double Concerto for Flute, Guitar, and Strings (BIS) . . that one right there is Blumien recorded in a space just right for a chamber size group and one you should own for both the original music and the recorded sound.  It's transcendent.  I'm not just showing out here, it's one of the best recommendations I can make for my discriminating listener chums.
