The album doesn't seem too controversial to me - except that she originally wanted to appear in blackface on the cover of the album. This, of course, did not go over well with the lawyers. Imagine what the music critics would do with it..and I believe that they did not treat it kindly as it was. However she was sincere in her belief that we should acknowledge that the 'blackness' of a lot of this old-timey country music is real, and that it was not "immaculately conceived in Las Vegas". She performs with several black artists on the album. This is a high quality recording, comparable to
