PS Capacitance for tube power amp
« on: 5 Feb 2006, 09:21 pm »
It's time for me to replace the power supply capacitors in my quicksilver monoblocks.  The amps use Mallory CGS 320uF 450v electrolytics.  Looking at the Mallory CGS page on Mouser.com, I see that I can get up to 800uF 450v caps that will clamp and screw right in.

So is bigger better in this application or should I stay with the same value?

Are there other makes and sources of caps that I should consider other than the Mallorys?

Thanks all.  Happy Superbowl Sunday.

I'd probably stick to the same value unless you have a schematic for the amp.  Here is another source for B+ voltage caps...  http://www.hndme.com/storecapelectrolnich.html

Check out the Nichicon LQ's at 330uf/450vdc for $9/ea.  I have no idea what is better between Mallory and Nichicon but hndme is a tube-o-phile and usually carries what he has liked himself.

The Nichicons are a nice sounding cap. Personally, I'd steer clear of the Mallory's. I've found them a bit soft and slow sounding.

You may want to consider the JJ's. They are a nice sounding cap too. You have a few other choices but they start to get expensive (but are generally worth the cost). Jensens, F&T's, Black Gates (in limited values), Elna Cerifines (very good but limited values) and the polypropyline Unlytic's look interesting but I've not played with them.
