R-19 faced 23" wide in a role of 9 sheets about 8' long each
R-19 unfaced 23" (same as above)
R-13 faced 15" (same as above)

The local lumber store gave me a price of $77 and some change.

Is this a good price or should I drive twenty five minutes to compare at Lowe's and Home Depot?

How about using the telephone instead of the car? I'm sure you'll be put on hold for a while, but probably not 25 min. and no money for gas.

That's funny.  I'm so comfortable with the internet, when their prices were not posted on the web I didn't even think of using the old technology sitting on my desk.

Hiya Mike,

Hey, if you are thinking about the Risch tube trap, I've got a far better alternative that will give you better absorbtion and its WAY easier to build.

Give me a buzz.

Scott,
Can you not share your "secret recipe" here? Because there're many other people like Mike who're looking to DIY bass trap..

Sometime ago, someone posted about just using a case (10) of 2'x4'x1/2" ceiling panels (5" total) with plastic wrap and all as basstrap.  I know my basement drop ceiling panel (Armstrong) says .5 NRC.  How would they work if a method can be devised to hang them up on wall corners with picture hanging cables?

Heres a link to one of the previous threads here in the Acoustic Circle regarding pipe covering.

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=18278&highlight=

It should answer most of your questions. My comments are on the second page of teh thread.

Nope.  I'm just insulating the wall behind the speakers with R19 to help a bit with upper bass boom.  I am also going to double insulate the ceiling above the speakers and above my chair.  I should have enough to possibly double insulate the ceiling between almost every joist.  There are so many wires up there, I may just give up and go for Jon Risch's "lazy man's bass trap."  That is just a roll of insulation or two stacked in the corner.

I am having a bass problem.  I'd love to see your plans.

By the way, Brian Pape sold me some 1 inch 2x4 foot acoustic cotton panels and some 2 inch 2x4 foot acoustic cotton panels.  They are excellent!  I had no Idea my midrange was so good.

For anyone interested, Brian frequents this site as well as the Gateway Audio Society page.  In fact he is a card-carrying member of the GAS gang.

I think his site is www.sensiblesoundsolutions.com

Ryan, Bingo!

Mike, don't forget that absorption isn't about thickness, it's about density.

Is mineral wool safer to handle compare to fiberglass too?

IIG MinWool-1200 Pipe Insulation.

Any idea how that compares to Knauf  Fiberglass Pipe Insulation?  It is also available in 3' lengths, and has the option of an outer jacket made of kraft paper bonded to aluminum foil and reinforced with a fiberglass scrim.

Here is the skinny on the two different types. These are the absoption coeffients based on thickness shown.

                                                     Frequency
Type...............................Thk. ....125.....250......500......1k......2 k......4k
Mineral Wood Board......4.00....0.86....1.11.....1.2 0....1.07...1.08....1.07
Rigid FG board..............4.00.....0.75....1.1 9.....1.17....1.05...0.97....0.98
FG blanket, unfaced......3.50....0.38.....0.90..... 1.00....0.93...0.94....0.99

...i sure wish there was an easier (and more legable) way to create a table, oh well.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Scott!

I guess I was thinking that, when ignoring the differences in material densities and thicknesses, the foil faced scrim would be helpful in a bass trap scenario.  This thought was based on some comments made in another thread.  The catch is that the difference in absorbtion numbers seem to be dominated by the different densities and thicknesses of the various products.

I'm also wondering if one's selection might change depending on the choice between a free-standing tubular bass trap, and a quarter round placed up against the corner of a room.  The proximity to the room (wall) boundary will most likely be quite different between the two.

Actually, it's a combination of thickness AND density.

Think of it this way, would you rather have 2" of 6lb fiberglass or 4" of 4lb fiberglass?  The 4" will do a better job even though it's less dense.

Now, $ for $, 6" of 3lb will do a better job than 4" of 6lb for 25% less money.

All,
I have to thank people who pointed me to this mineral wool alternative. Previously I have been looking all over Houston trying to find Owens Corning and Knauff fiberglass board but unsuccessful.

I have managed to find IIG mineral wool product this morning though. The question I have is given this IIG MinWool-1200 pipe has density of 8lb, What would be the minimum thickness that I should get?

And do I need different thickness for 1st reflection point vs using as bass trap at 4 corners?

  Thank you very much.

Did you find it at an actual store?  I looked at the links on the site to locate this stuff, and it appears that it only gives information on sales managers and the like.  I e-mailed them anyway.

I first emailed the sales representative on their website, then he gave me the contact details for the store, I then called the store and confirm that they do sell these things..
