Good Wireless 802.11g Router for SB3?
« on: 16 Jan 2006, 05:18 pm »
I currently have a Linksys b-based router. However, I really want to upgrade to a g-based router before installing the SB3 and Slimserver.

Are the Linksys/Netgear/? etc. routers all equally compatible with the SB3 and Slimserver?

I've been using a Linksys WRT54G for over a year with success.  However, after playing with the SB2 for several months I think I will upgrade to the Linksys WRT54GS (with SpeedBooster) for even a better wireless performance.  In the interim I added a Linksys Access Point WPA54G and several antennas to boost the signal strength.

I had the WRT54G, and it was pretty buggy - lots out there on the Net about how the recent firmware is trash...

I returned it, and have had success with the WRT54GS.

Look for buzz words like MIMO and GbE.  Or just try the D-Link DLG-4300 GamerLounge Router, which specializes in allowing for 256 levels of QoS prioritization. The integrated GamerFuel technology can automatically assign prioritizations, but users can go in and fine-tune a variety of application types, not just games.

The Linksys WRT54G can be found as a bargain.

For the most part. Linksys keeps its firmware fairly up to date.

You can also get opensource firmware if you want fancier features.

I've been using the Netgear WPN824 MIMO router (7 internal antennae) that automatically configures itself for the best signal path. It is upstairs and a room across from the SB2 and gets 85% signal strength. Never had a dropout. I believe Wayne at Bolder Cables uses the same router.

The netgear website has a link to independent measurements that were done, comparing the signal strength (straight line and through walls) against the Linksys WRT54 and something else (can't remember).
