Try out Blackfoot's "Strikes" album from 1979.  Engineered and produced by Henry Weck (Al Nalli also listed as a producer).  This album shows me what I believe to be compression having a place in the sound of an album.  Punchy, warm, and rocking!  Plus, every song is good--a high point is Shorty Medlocke (son Rick Medlocke was a key member of Blackfoot) playing the introductory harmonica to the kick-ass version of "Train Train".

I really like rock and roll as an audiophile pursuit.  Typically, the home listening experience is a lot better than most rock concerts I've been to!
