Just got home. Man, was it a blast.  Scott's DRD, my Yamamoto, Willie's 50 amp (wow!) Marktwain's little kit amp and vinyl spinning all night.  Then Scott breaks out all the Squeezebox units and we listen to stock, modified and modified through the AudioNote DAC.  We all want one of the Squeezeboxes now!!!!!

Scott took lots of pictures so I hope to see the gathering on the circle soon.  See you soon and sorry about the work schedule.

Its just starting to wind down. We're sending out the Big Fun System in style with some Snoop, Ludacris, Bubba Sparxx, basically anything with way to much bass that can be played way too damned loud.

Damn my feet hurt.

I'll post some pics in the morrow.

I can second it was a blast, got home WAY too late and got up WAY to early. Work sucks.
I have never heard such BIG sound from such small power. I will also say that the lowthers (spelling?) threw the biggest soundstage (wide, deep and TALL) I have ever heard. Listening to Morphine actually made me think the guys were standing on a stage and I was sitting down in front. Cool to say the least.
Squeeze box is on my list to buy NOW! It blew me away. The stock unit with Sturgis' CAL dac kept my head shaking and my heart smiling
My favorite moment was the when Rick (I think that was his name, could be wrong) asked Sturgis if "Tubes are better".
It was time to leave the room :D
Great music everywhere and Scotts selection of music is mind blowing.
Thanks for a great night guys!

Yup.  Good times had by all.  Wish I could have stayed longer.

Frankenstein with the 50's was certainly something special - thanks Willie.  The little SqueezeBox with Sturgis' DAC was pretty sweet too.

Then the big boy 18 WPC ST35 clone came out.  Nice sound - definitely ready to rock.

Thanks Scott.  Nice to finally meet everyone.

Ditto. A fine time was had by all.   Thanks Scott for the wonderful hospitality as usual. It was great to meet some of the new members, Adrian, Mark, Jamie and Chris and to see some faces we haven't seen in awhile.

Thanks to Kendrick for his excellent taste in tunes--I came home with a list of artists to add to my stash. :notworthy:

Hearing all those flea powered amps on the Lowther's was (as always) a humbling experience for a low effiency planar/high powered amp guy.   And it's always an honor and a pleasure to hear one of Willie's creations.  :notworthy:  :notworthy: If only the rest of the guys on the Circle could hear Willie's amps!

Scott, the Squeezebox shootout was truly eye/ear opening. I was amazed how the tricked out SB held it's own against the SB/Audio Note DAC combo.

Luckily, I was there to get in on Brian's crash course in room treatments. Most instructive even if it was a bit like seeing how many guys you could fit in a VW!  If he could get a room that size under control, I'm sure he could offer us all the best, inexpensive system tweak--room treatments  .

Thanks also to Laura for the great vittles. She should have the first honorary GAS tee-shirt just for putting up with us! :notworthy:

YAYYus!
What everybody said!!

A most splendid time, even sober!

All these things above and more and the clarity of mind today to embrace it all.
The gear matchups were way over the top, and I've never been in a store with more good sounds...
There was enough variability to stock a fine show!

Much as my wallet doesn't like it, I had to get over the chip on my shoulder regarding the Squeezebox' ability to compete in the Big Boy's arena!
To quote the immortal sage Will Smith from that time-honored film of trial and redemption (Independence Day):
"I GOTTA GET ME ONE OF THESE!"
A special thanks to Wayne@Bolder for loaning us SB units to listen and compare.  You do good stuff Wayne!  In an incredible attempt to remain relatively scientific, as Mike and Scott flicked thru 3 SB varieties plus the Wadia CD unit, even I could hear the differences as our crowd of 20 or so sat up and listened. Wow!

Thanks to everyone who brought gear.  So many variations of *really great!*  (Extra special to you Mark for the listen to that ST35-Clone-Done-Right!  Your example and tips have me champing to get my 'clone' out to mess with again!)
Willie- what can I say?  Yer an artist!  And don't forget to let us know where you are gonna be playing in the new group!
Scott, your DRD's are as lovely as I had hoped.  Sound and looks, especially 'under the hood'.

Like Steve, I'm rooting for Laura as honorary GASian mascot extraordinaire, or something like that.  Your food and patience with all of us was once again way over the top, and my many thanks for listening and coping.

And lastly and not leastly, thanks to everyone there for the fine spirits of cameraderie and fellowship we share when entrenched in our sound addiction.  New folks folded right in as 'best-friends-we-hadn't-met-yet' with a smile and handshake and hell, a big-ass grin as the next tune spun up.  Like some of the best old-school Dead concerts I went to with 'strangers stopping strangers, just to shake their hand'.

Thanks everyone for the release of this event which put an especially good flavor to this season.

Hoping everyone got home okay, and you got at least as much 'buzz' as I did from it.
Hope yer feet get better Scott! Host-with-the-most needs time to sit!

Warmest Regards,
DeadFish

Scott F.

Well, here are the pics from last night. Unfortunately I missed a couple of shots I wish I should have taken advantage of but so it goes.

We had a great turnout. I think there were 16 of us total. We missed a few of our regulars like Tim who is nursing a kidney stone that won't depart quietly (I bet it was that Haggis you had for Thanksgiving dinner), bmed who had to work patching people back together in the ER, Vasu who is MIA, Alex who spent the day with an ill relative, pjchappy who I think we perminently scared off (you would have enjoyed this gathering, it was all about computer based audio which we were all overly impressed with), Kirch who had another commitment, bosterkisco (Dude, we NEED to do a KSHE classics night) and all others that escape my feeble memory at this time.

Before we get to the picks I'd like to thank a few people that made this evening a success.

First Bryan (bpape) for coming to the resue in the small listening room. He brought over tons of room treatments to add to the ones I had. Amazingly it made that tiny bedroom sound pretty darned good with those big floorstanders (and yes you are a miricle worker).

Next, Wayne at Bolder Cable for letting us play with his modified Squeezeboxes. Honest to goodness, the guys that showed up will never think that computer based audio is inferior again. The testament to this was everybodies grumblings saying "Well damn, this is going to cost me some more money."

Next, Klaus of Odyssey for letting us use the Khartago once again and the guys from Aperion Audio for the use of the 633 T floorstanders.

Next, Sturgus, Mike D, Deadfish and Steve K for bringing some of their gear over. Even though we didn't get to use all of it it was great to have it as backups. Sturgus's CAL DAC saved the Big Fun System from mediocritey. Mike and his Wadia gave a great reference to a true high end CD player.

Of Course, Willie and Mark@martwain for bringing their awesome amplifier creations (see pics below).

...and finally, I'd like to thank my lovely wife for cooking all of the yummie eats and putting up with all of our audio neurosis's's's's.

and now on to the BIG show

The Fleapowered System with Blackmores Yammies doing it doggie style on top.

A little audio porn of Blackmore's Yamamoto up close and personal. Turn On's "I love fat bottles and efficient speakers." Turn Off's "I lothe silicon and crossovers."

Willies Frankenstein taking a dominating stance over the GASsers.

Mark's Skeleton amp taking sloppy thirds and amazing people that size really doesn't make a difference.

.
.
.
.
.
.
this is where you have to imagine Marks big 6BQ5 amp with the copper top is riding on the back of the Fleapowered System (and everybody rather enjoying it too)(sorry I spazzed out and forgot to take a pic).
.
.
.
.
.

....and the more than crowded front end...

Some more close up porn of Mikes Wadia, Sturgus's CAL DAC doing the stock SB3, the NEC swapper and my lonely Tjoeb let to just watch.
Oh, there's my Scotch !

One of Waynes SB2's being done by the AudioNote.

and the red headed stepchild taking a back seat to all the new technology.

and sitting on the other side of the bench, way on the other side of the Group W bench was the the ultra cool Odyssey, Lazarus, Bolder Modded SB2, Aperion speakers and Bryans Sensible Sound Solutions (room treatments) Room. Think really big headphones.

All of the guys being mezmerized as we listened in amazement to all of the different flavors of Squeezeboxes as Mike switches back and forth between them all.

Actually we thought about doing ABX testing but we don't need no stinking double blind tests. They all sounded the same so save your money and dig our your zip cord and the ICs that came with your $60 DVD player cuz it don't make no difference. Oh, and there is no such thing as break in either.

...and finally

...the winning GAS logo (by a landslide)

I've got my own impressions on the SB's that I'll save for the article (all of which are very positive) so I'll leave it to you guys to comment on the individual pieces.

Oh, and BTW, Lowthers and single ended triodes DON'T do complex music, Rock and Roll or Rap worth a damned so don't waste your time considering them

It was great seeing all the new faces. Thanks to everybody for showing up.

and finally my highlight of the night was when Adrian came into the shop and asked if I could take a look and figue out why his phono stage on his brand new Audible Illusions 3a was making noise. I looked at him dead pan and said in my best hillbilly voice "wull... I always wunted to werk on one a dem."

.....his expression was absolutely priceless.

All I can say is DAMN   it just keeps getting better. It was great to see everyone and meet the new guys. It looks like this group is going places. I have to give thanks to Scott for his hospitality.  Special thanks to his boss for allowing us to invade her home.(Thank You Laura, I will let Bob know he missed some serious BBQ). What is truly amazing is that over half the night we listened to old tubes that aren't made any more, and a obsolute source called a  turntable. Funny as much as I was impressed by the SB3 it still can't compare.  Once again it was great to see everyone and hope we do it again real soon. Tim hope you are feeling better soon.

I had an incredible time and couldn't believe how good everything sounded.  From Mark T.'s pricey 8 watter to Willie's 50's.  Incredible music from just a few watts and a single driver speaker.  Amazing!
Are they for sale yet Scott?

Thank you Scott for hosting a terrific party, to Laura for feeding the troops and to everyone who brought a piece of equipment.

Scott--Thanks for the pics.  I tell you, that TT gives me a boner everytime I see it.

Blackmore, love that Yammy-----I must hear it, I must.

It's interesting to hear everyone's views on the SB3.  I've been using my computer as my digital source for over a year with the lowly Airport Express, finding it matched my previous source.  But, I must concur with Sturgus, never heard anything the match of vinyl.

Love the Logo, what are the plans for its use, t-shirts, caps, pink lacy thongs with.....wait, did I say that out loud...

Steve, I should probably get my dues to you....I'll need your address.

Great to hear everyone had a great time; like you'd expect anything less with you guys.

Cheers,
Brad

Good to see that you guys took me up on the name tag idea I had from the very first meet.   Though it kind of makes it look like an AA meeting....wait it really is an audiophile anonymous meeting

I'd like to make it to one of the get togethers again someday.  I would of loved to hear the squeezebox comparison as I'm considering ordering one myself.  Does it beat the Ah! CDP?  I was really impressed by the Ah! the first time I heard it.

When Steve finally graduates to SET he can sell me his VTL gear  :P

When you get to that level of detail, there are only very small differences between the two players. Granted the AH! has the tubed outputs which translate to some different dynamics and tonal characterisics, the difference in detail retrieval between the two was/is neglegable. The with the upsampler in the AH! the soundstage between the two was pretty darned close. Now that the DACs on Waynes units are finally starting to open up fully, I need to sit down and do some serious listening.

The stock SB needs to be modded to get the most from it. Obviously the ones on hand were Wayne's at Bolder Cable. Everybody was more than impressed with their sounds. Enough that a couple of the guys are looking at volume buy discounts.

I still think there is a need to keep a decent CD player around, but I know all of my CD's are now and in the future being ripped to my hard drive.

Scott if you are continuing to cross over to the dark side I suggest you part with your by now redundant turntable. You obviously don't need it or the stand it sits on. I'll give you $50 for it.
