Are the bi-fet parts reused in An OmegaStar PAT-5?
« on: 27 Nov 2005, 05:52 pm »
I have an older PAT-5 and a newer PAT-5 bi-fet and want to do an OmegaStar rebuild. If I am reading the Web site correctly, all the audio boards are replaced as part of the rebuild, so I might as well start with the older unit. Correct?

All other things being equal, use the Pat-5 in the best physical condition.  Some parts are recycled, including the pushbutton switches, tone controls, selector switch, and jacks (unless you add the jack set kit option).  If both Pat-5s are working now, check them out for good signal continuity on all the jacks and switch functions.  A major switching dropout in the main bank of pushbutton switches is a real pain in the ass to deal with after the fact.

It does not matter which version of the Pat-5 you use from a circuit standpoint, the audio circuits are replaced, the important things are the condition of the necessary recycled hardware.

Thanks.

Is the fiberglass selector switch the same as the one for the PAS3? That's the only one I see on the price sheet.

Yes, it is the same switch.  It can be configured for all of the different applications we need for all our preamplifiers.

I am listening to my OmegaStar PAT-5 and I am amazed. Cool, crisp and clean. I got the kit version along with the jack set and selector switch. Worked on it a couple hours each day for about 8 days, taking it slow and careful. Right away I noticed a vastly improved clarity and detail and mids and highs that are sweet and smooth and more present than ever before but not harsh like some solid state equipment. I didn't think these speakers could sound this good.

Kudos, Mr. Van Alstine.

Hey Dave, what speakers you using? Since we are both in Tucson, will have to get together with you sometime. I need some egemacation as to this new fangled tube stuff. My last exposure to tube stuff was some modified Mike Mofett Stereo 70's.

Dave's OmegaStar PAT-5 is actually solid-state, but...

I find that AVA gear doesn't really have a "tube" or "solid state" sound. It just sounds good. :)

Well, I suppose that's how electronics should sound, with no sound to call its own.
