What's your favorite stuffing?

Hi all,

No this is not for turkey, well at least not yet. Stuffing for speakers that is   Calling all the DIYer speaker builders. I want to know what is your favorite speaker stuffing.

I have only used Acousta-stuff for my home made TQWT and the smaller one base on non-taper Voigt pipe.  That's seem to works fine. But I wonder if there is something better suit for my speaker. For my design, I think it would be best to use something that work best absorbing the lower mid to higher freq. So, I won't be choking the line with too much stuffing.

So, what is you take or expreince on this.

1. Acousta-stuff.
I'm using this right now and so far seem to work fine. But have not compare to other stuff. The good thing about this is that is not dangerouse as the yellow fibergalss.

2. Natural wool.
This was my other consideration but it cost a bit more and might atract bugs. I might give this a try since I think it will be more absorben at higher freq.

3. Yellow or Pink fiberglass.

What is the difference between the yellow and pink one? They are cheap and easily find. But my concern is that is not good for your skin and even more dangerous if it get airborne and get into your lung! :o Especially woring in small NYC apt.

So, any speaker builder want to share your take or experience on this?

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

hi acouststuff is ok whem you need some volume increase and as its denser it does help with some standing wave breakdown and killing of hf in cabs
in tqwt the best i found was wool batting from fabric shop, but dont stop there i have also lined some cabs with felt and poly stuffing for pillows
in the tqwt use some accoustuff on the narrowest part of the tapered wave and line the rest with wool
the fiberglass insulation is just thay insulation but on some big boxes its usefull as a filler and so forth i have used it in sub boxex etc
in the end you have to keep playing thats the fun of diy
have fun fellow nyc diyer

I've used superfine merino, washed and combed. The cost was about $12 for enough to stuff a couple of 1 cubic foot boxes. I was advised [Alan Hulsebus,  Orca speaker designer] to hold the stuffing against the walls of the cabinet if possible.

I'm pleased with the results though since my source is Australian it probably isn't much use to you  [ www.melandapark.com ].

If you do choose to use wool I suggest that either a fine, soft wool or lambswool is the best choice. Wool varies a lot and carpet wool is quite hard.

Go to www.madisound.com and order the lambswool.

I used this to replace fiberglass in a pair of RM 40's.

Hi,

Guys, thanks for all of your coments.  Man! it had been a while since I posted this message. I though I'm the only DIY speaker builder here in the AC!  :o

Well, I get it is time for me to call Madisound again. I'm thinking of doing another pair of a smaller single dirver spekaer. So, I guess I will order some wool to try.

Hmmm... wonder if all natural wool will make my system sound even more organic

Take care all,
