Good list, except I disagree with Poltergeist...

Another that come to mind is Night of the Living Dead.

And John Carpenter made a movie called "Prince of Darkness" that freaked me out and sticks in my mind for some reason....

I do like most of the picks thus far, but for sheer scariness i think it's difficult to beat asian horror films. You should check-out juon, the eye, ringu, tale of two sisters, and audition (more creepy than scary). Tale of two sisters (Janghwa, Hongryeon) and audition (odishon) are not extremely scary, but are both really well made film. Those five are not very obscure and should be available at your local video stores, even blockbuster.

By the way, this site http://www.slasherpool.com/ is a nice resource for horror film reviews, especially foreign films.

Thanks to Sci-Fi channel, that final resting place for things that man was not meant to film, I've just recently seen the worst (and least scary) horror movie of all time - "Dracula 3000". Despite the presence of a curvy blonde, do not see this movie. They couldn't even be bothered to come up with an ending - way too much work, I guess - so if you attempt to stick it out in the hopes that the curvy blonde will say or do something interesting, you get what you deserve.

OK, Plan 9 From Outer Space was in fact worse in terms of setting, acting and even plot, but at least P9FOS gave you a sort of horrified fascination - how much worse can it get? (Wow, exploding sunlight? There's a new low!) D3000 just didn't have that same thrill factor.

Just one question: have you seen manos the hand of fate? I've seen many bad movies, but that one actually makes me regret having watched it it was so bad.

ringu...

Was it better than the American remake? I remember drumming my fingers during "The Ring". I found the Ring's promotional website to be more disturbing than the actual movie, which is pretty sad.

I did think the original ringu was better, but it won't be scary if you've seen the american version.

No, but I'm told it's must-see in the category of So Bad It Hurts. Sort of the film equivalent of an "Eye of Argon", apparently? You wonder why they bothered? I'm told I have to see Ishtar, too.

Of course, the ultimate in unwatchable media is any Teletubbies show you've been before. They are grim enough the first time, but the threat pf having to see one again has cleared out an entire room of otherwise brave adults. Channels like Sci Fi do their Halloween specials, and I smile - they have no terror like what's in my old VCR tape pile.

Call me crazy, but one of my favorite films (not just horror films) is "Vamp", starring Chris Makepeace and Grace Jones.  Not a scary film, but off-beat and funny.  The story: a couple of guys trying to pledge a fraternity are given the task of hiring a stripper for a party.  They go to a strip club in a dark part of town to find one, and it turns out that the strip club is a home to a society of vampires...

I remember as a kid The Shining freaked me out.  When I was really young I saw Salem's Lot and had nightmares for a long time.  I saw it again a few years back and went, what was scary about this?

Exorcist is a good one, same with the Shining.

I thought, despite being an overal lame movie, that Event Horizon was moderately scary.

The original Halloween, Shining, and Exorcist all made me sleep on my parent's floor as a kid.  Those movies screwed me up! :nono:

Also, the original Psycho freaked me out as well.

The 24th Day is pretty scary, I guess.  I liked it.  Same with Dawn of the Dead.

Yes, with Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neal.  Gotta say I wasn't a fan of that one...

Movies don't scare me in the traditional sense....but I do find some movies do have a sort of creepiness that sticks with me.  And I really like good zombie movies when you can feel the chaotic hopelessness of the protagonists. With that said:

Night of the living dead

Dawn of the dead - color drained away a good chunk of the first movie's creepiness and the gore was elevated (and goes over the top in Day), still the end of the world feeing is there in spades.

Diabolique - French murder mystery - man is it creepy.

28 Days later

The Addiction - An indy, B&W  vampire flick with an overtly Christian subtext (beyond just the crucifix). Again the gore is overstated, but the atmosphere and the theological/philosophical nature of the story really makes the film linger in your head.

Seven - One of the few good serial killer reels.

Henry, Portrait of a serial killer - Indy slasher flick shot entirely from the killer's POV.....succeeds where Stone's NBK fails. It's disturbing to watch so be warned.

Thanks,
Rob

There were a couple of movies that were great..especially when they came out and I was young, and naive...

Prince of Darkness....by Wes Craven....Alice Cooper made a cameo appearance as a crazy homelessman that followed the dark side.

HellRaiser....the first and second.

and what really makes me scared now...

Ring I(the original and not the remake)

Juon AKA:  The Grudge.  The Japanese original was really freaky.  This sort of movies makes you question the idea of simple everyday things that can have a dark context....distorted TV pictures, white noise etc...

The Outsiders, was also an excellent flick, stylish and well acted.

The Uninvited Guest, a Korean Horror flick is also very decent.

The Tale of Two Sister...this is one awesome movie.

The Red Shoes...another great flick...

Enjoy you all.

Howard the Duck gave me nightmares when I was a kid but I figured I would leave that one off the list
I've never seen Night of the Living Dead or Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer which will be remedied soon  8)
