Braces in the mls RM 40 are located on either side of the midrange subenclosure.  All RM 30 have L-braces attached both to the subenclosure and the sides of the cabinet walls.

I specified these braces, I paid for them, I certainly want them to be there.

Just checked all my demo cabinets, braces are in place in the positions described.  On the 626 brace is side to side and firmly attached to the subenclosure as well as side cabinet walls.

I'd like to see pix of any mls cabinet lacking braces, as I am sure mls himself would like to.

Maybe I just had a hard time seeing them because of the soundcoat.  I did however notice less vibrational behavior once I braced them a little more.  Before I could put my hand opn the cabinet and could feel the vibration    Not any more though, so I am happy and it was a good experience for me as well.

The Wilson cubs are 75 pounds:

I always liked the Wilson Cubs, although I think they are obscenely expensive -- last time I checked, they were about $7,500 with stands.

No, you're right Brian, the Watts (part of the Watt Puppy system) are 65 pounds:

I've always liked Wilsons, so I went and listened to them all the time in AZ and a couple of times in CT.  I do think they are overpriced for the performance.  They have nice cabinets, though.

How about pics of the bracing in your demo cabinets?

This way all could see what it loooks like and easily identify the bracing themselves when they look inside.

I plan on doing the whisper mat project on my MLS RM 40s this weekend if I get the matting from Youngdave in time. I will check and see if there are braces and report back.  I believe I got a pair of African Ebony from the first MLS shipment.  It could be that braces were missing on cabinets from the first shipment.  I know from experience that a new order from a new source usually takes several deliveries before you get exactly what you want.

You are correct.  There were two mls shipments, sample quantities (about 6 ea of every model and finish) in Jun 2004 and a containerfull in Sep 2004.  The first was produced in the Star Sound cabinetshop mls was using at the time.  The second run came out of the new mls facility he had just opened.

I can supply bracing free of charge to anyone desiring it.  More dramatic in its damping effect (in addition to Soundcoat) is the BH5/SR71. I will make that available to any owner at low cost (email or phone me for price).  Be careful with BH 5 as you can damp all the LF right out of a speaker with it if you use too much.

Brian,

Your last post is exactly what we discussed when I received my first run cabinets and called about a lack of bracing.  Since you are aware that I have no agenda I will set the record staight on my pair. Perhaps only one pair of RM40s slipped through or more, I have no personal knowledge of others or your current stock.

In the same discussion I mentioned the veneer was different between the two speakers in African Ebony, there was also the spacing of the midrange panel as the hole was cut about 1/8" too deep and required spacers that you installed.

Since I disassembled and removed all the insulation to install the braces I examined the entire cabinet.  No pictures as I was satisfied with your explaination and the window braces I installed were there to brace the woofers just below the midrange box, top and bottom.

As you know me not to be a trouble maker or to bash manufacturer's products, I hope you understand that this submitted to reflect only my experience and for purpose's of clarification.

Glad you were able to get the problem taken care of on your own.

There were only about five pair of RM 40 in the first run.  I have found bracing on all the cabinets from the second run.

Brian,

I am going to do the bh5 thing shortly, as it is on it's way here.  How much should I be using in the 626r cabinet as well as a larger subwoofer?

Thanks!

Use two full sheets of BH5 in the sub.  In the 626 remove the fiberglass first and start with a small amount, 6x6" square.  Add to taste.  Keep away from port.

How about for an RM40?  I plan on doing my Largers and RM40 at the same time.

Two sheets per cabinet will suffice for the RM 40.

The SR71 is definetly a very big improvement. I compared them to my non-SR71's and WOW. Time to open the 30's back up  8)
