Hi,
I was wondering if anyone compare two CD players Rotel RCD-1072 and Arcam 73T? Which one is better in term of build quality and sound?

thanks very much.

My experience with Rotel and Arcam are that they are pretty much on opposite ends of the spectrum sonically.  Which one is "better" is a matter of taste.  FWIW, I used to own an Arcam FMJ-CD23, and I bought my dad a Rotel system a few years ago, so I've spent some time with both...

IMHO, Rotel tends to have a dark and weighty sound, whereas Arcam is more open and lean.  Both IMHO are smooth, although Arcam might win the smoothness battle between them.

according to a quick google search, it would appear that the Arcam does not play hdcd discs.

Well, ok, I should say that it does not decode hdcd portions of discs, for all y'all being specific!

I'd check with some Rotel owners regarding build quality if possible.  I have heard some rumblings in the past about quality control issues with other Rotel products.  It may or may not apply to the RCD-1072.  Both units have received favorable reviews.  The Rotel had a review written by The Absolute Sound, and the Arcam had reviews written by Hi Fi News, Hi Fi World and What Hi Fi.  Might be worth digging up.

I haven't personally heard either in person, so I won't shamelessly plug the Arcam.  I'd recommend demoing each if possible.

..agree w/ Phil regarding differences in presentation.

The Arcam 'seems' to have a better quality 'feel' to it. (feel of the controls, etc.) And it's upgradeable to the CD192....

FWIW..

To throw a monkey wrench in the mix, I'd look at the Cambridge 640. It sounds close to the Arcam, and a couple of hundred less. offten, I see Audio Advisor having demos of black or silver on sale for $419. Just a thought.

If you get the chance check out the Creek CD 50 MkII.  Unlike the Arcam and Rotel the Creek is upgradeable and it got much better reviews than both.  BTW I have the Creek and I love it.

Better reviews?  Wasn't the Rotel named Product of the Year by TAS?  I don't think I've ever seen a more widely praised product than the Rotel CD player.

I've never heard one, though.

Another vote for the Cambridge 640c (which I've owned). A fine cdp and at AA's price and with their 30 day return policy, it's a no-brainer :D .

My all time favorite cdp the Rega Jupiter. I've owned YBA, Jolida, AH, Rotel, Pioneer and Cambridge Audio cdps plus a Planet 2000 in the last 5 years and always wanted a Jupiter and finally bought one last year. It's a great looking and sounding fun piece of audio gear :D
