Hi Danny...

I have another question...and please forgive my ignorance if this sounds too newbie-ish (which I am);

I am really captivated by this new design but I believe this speaker might be too tall for my room (16'Lx13'Wx8'H which is open to the kitchen). My question is can this speaker by made shorter (i.e. perhaps by leaving the 12" sub out of the equation and thus eliminating 12" of height)?

Would this be feasable or would the shorter height of the speaker create problems with the overall sound (imaging and the soundstage)?

I really like both of your designs (the Prototype RA8 and the A/V4). Might have to take a short car ride to see Al and hear them for myself once the RMAF is over.

:?:  PS Have you built another pair of the A/V4? I haven't  heard anything new regarding them other than they were manhandled by a courier company  :(

Those speakers look very impressive!  I will be interested to hear what others thought about them after having the opportunity to listen to them.

As for a name for the speakers, how about "GR8"   .  Sorry but I couldn't resist.  It does have 8 transducers though.

If the speaker sounds airy... well why not name it the "GR Airy".  Or lets try some of the synonyms such as the GR:

Diaphanous
Ethereal
Gossamer
Sheer

and my favorite, "The GR Aeriform" which as per Webster's it's "Having the form or nature of air"

Danny if you chose to use one of these names, can I win a pair of the LS9 Arrays?

These speakers are not tall enough for height to be an issue. They are barely over 5' tall.

What needs to be maintained is the tweeter height.

The 12" side loaded woofers can be left off.

I will also try a shorter version leaving off the top two woofers and using a pair of M-130/16's in the bottom end with no built in sub. This should still hit the 90db sensitivity range, be 8 ohms, and have output with a -3db down point in the mid to upper 40's.

I had Al build a new set of boxes for me as the last ones were purchased by UPS. I believe he just finished them. I am surprised he did not send pics of them already. They will arrive here next week. I'll get info up on the web site soon.

Thanks guys for all the names. I am mulling them over.

Hello all, I have a few names to add to the list for these awesome speakers.

GR Research Olympian
(Olympian: a being of lofty detachment or superior attainments)

GR Reaserch Ethereal or Celestial
(Ethereal: of or relating to the regions beyond the earth)
(Celestial: of, relating to, or suggesting heaven or divinity)

GR Research Zenith or Summit
(Summit: highest or most advanced point)
(Zenith: culminating point)

I really like the entomology of Zenith, I think any of those words would do well too.
Quote
Zenith Etymology: Middle English senith, from Middle French cenith, from Old Spanish zenit, modification of Arabic samt (ar-ra's) way (over one's head)

The Entomology of Summit is OK as well.
Quote
Summit Etymology: Middle English somete, from Middle French, from Old French, diminutive of sum top, from Latin summum, neuter of summus highest

From the Latin root of Air.
The GR Research Aer

And lastly, but probably my favorite.

The GR Research Siren

Siren of the greek mythology of course.
Quote
In Greek mythology, the Sirens are creatures with the head of a female and the body of a bird. They lived on an island (Sirenum scopuli; three small rocky islands) and with the irresistible charm of their song they lured mariners to their destruction on the rocks surrounding their island (Virgil V, 846; Ovid XIV, 88).

Well, thats all I can think of right now.

The Cloud Series

Cumulus
Stratus
Cirrus
Cumulonimbus

Of course the Cumulonimbus will be the big mutha with the built-in sub

This is starting to sound very interesting, almost like a passive Orion set up  :)

Sorry I'm so late coming to the party, but based on the descriptions of the sound, why not call it "The Hologram".  Good luck!

Holographic series huh? Hmmmm.

Reminds me of Carver's Sonic Hologrophy processor.

I's hard to come up with an original name, because over the years many companys have used names to emphasize their products imaging abilities. Many of the best names have been used.

Here's some more:

"SoundsAlive" series

"Musical Landscape" series

"Open Spaces" series
